One of the best parts of the Kirby franchise is how flexible it is. If you so choose, you can romp right through the main campaign of whichever game you please while paying little attention to the story. For those who do want to delve into Kirby lore, though, there are plenty of tidbits to uncover here and there. Kirby and the Forgotten Land was absolutely bursting to the brim with new lore details, and you can read all about them here. Now, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is receiving a new DLC story called Star-Crossed World. As you might expect, this will probably contain at least a few new lore drops. And today, we’re here to make a few predictions about what those might be! We’ll be discussing spoilers from a few major Kirby games, so keep that in mind before you continue.
The first thing you’ll notice with Star-Crossed World is that there are crystals everywhere. We’ve seen the opening movie for the DLC on the Nintendo Today app, and it shows a giant crystallized heart falling into the new world and spawning a sinister-looking island in the middle of the ocean. Tons of crystals are also scattered throughout the new world, and some of them contain Starries, a new race of star characters that Kirby has to save in each level. We’ve actually seen figurine descriptions for Starries, and we’ll include both of them below – they provide a big hint on what might be going on here.
These children of a mysterious twinkling planet have the power to contain the evil meteor. They fall to the various regions of the world and become crystals, waiting for someone to guide them. Individually, their power isn’t great. But gathered together, they can seal away great evil.
These children of a mysterious twinkling planet have the power to contain the evil meteor. In the distant past they traveled through time, crossed the galaxy, and discovered a planet-destroying meteor. They became planet protectors, turning themselves to crystal to seal away the meteor.
So, according to these descriptions, Starries can band together in great numbers to “seal away great evil”. This sentence alone is very telling: Void Termina, the final boss of Kirby Star Allies, was sealed away in a vessel called the Jamba Heart many eons prior to the events of that game. In Star-Crossed World, we can see a crystallized heart that greatly resembles the Jamba Heart falling from the sky. Void Termina was defeated by Kirby, and although he is known to reincarnate, we don’t think he’ll necessarily show up in Star-Crossed world. That said, it’s highly likely that the Starries are somehow responsible for sealing Void Termina away.
There’s another character who was sealed away, and is still sealed at the time of writing: Galacta Knight. He appeared as the final boss of Meta Knightmare Ultra in Kirby Super Star Ultra, where he was released from his crystal prison and eventually defeated by Meta Knight. He also appears as the presumed final boss of Guest Star mode in Kirby Star Allies before being consumed by Morpho Knight. That said, neither of these modes are considered canon, which means Galacta Knight is presumably still sealed away within a crystal. Given that the Starries are heavily associated with crystals and can seal away evil, it’s possible that they were the ones responsible for sealing away Galacta Knight as well. That said, Galacta Knight’s crystal prison in Kirby Super Star Ultra and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land is shaped kind of like a diamond, not a heart. We don’t know if the Starries always seal away evil inside of a heart (or if that’s how it works at all), but it’s interesting to note nonetheless.
It’s also important to note the appearance of the island that appears in Star-Crossed World. The crystallized heart not only resembles the Jamba Heart, but Star Dream Soul OS’s true form from Kirby: Planet Robobot as well. That’s almost certainly a coincidence, given how often the series uses hearts as symbolism. But perhaps more interesting is that the island has the same tall rock spires as the arena where Meta Knight battles Galacta Knight in Kirby Super Star Ultra. Again, this doesn’t confirm Galacta Knight’s appearance in Star-Crossed World, but it does add some credibility to the theory that the Starries could be the ones who sealed him away in the first place.
Furthermore, the figure description for the Big Starryflower states that they can create hidden paths that can lead Kirby to “something… or someone.” That’s some interesting wording there too, and it definitely adds even more to the Galacta Knight theory. But other than these little scraps of pre-release information, we don’t know too much more about Star-Crossed World’s story. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Kirby and the Forgotten Land launches in August this year, and once we’ve played it and dissected the lore, we’ll definitely be writing a summary.
Do you think this evidence is strong enough to suggest that Galacta Knight will appear in Star-Crossed World? Or do you think this is all somehow a big coincidence, and we’ll see a brand-new antagonist? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments down below.
