Nintendo DS Brand Continues Hot Streak, Wii Hits 20 Million Sales Milestone
The Nintendo DS™ franchise continued its strong sales and placed No. 1 across all platforms for May, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. U.S. consumers purchased nearly 390,000 Nintendo DSi™ systems and nearly 244,000 Nintendo DS systems in May, for a combined total of more than 633,000 hand-helds. Total Nintendo DS franchise sales are at more than 31 million in the United States.
Nintendo’s Wii™ console also hit a major milestone in May. With more than 289,000 unit sales in May, U.S. Wii sales crossed the 20 million mark after just 31 months on the market, reinforcing its position as the fastest-selling console in history.
Reggie on Wii Music, motion competition, DSi Virtual Console

“Last year we focused on Wii Music, and that is a title that’s very important to [Nintendo’s head of game development, Shigeru] Miyamoto, and for all of the criticism, it’s still a title that on a global basis has sold over two million copies.”
“I have personally seen a lot of iterations of similar technology (speaking about Sony/Microsoft’s motion sensing tech). Our first reaction is that it is ironic that, three or four years ago, the prevailing industry opinion was that prettier pictures or more horsepower were the waves of the future. And now it’s clear from both of our competitors that physical activity in gaming is the wave of the future. It’s also ironic that, for Nintendo, the future is here. The future is now.”
“(speaking of a DSi VC service) I know there has been a lot of speculation, but we have no plans for that.”
The most important point in these updates from Reggie – for me at least – is that there are “no plans” for the DSi VC. I was shocked that Nintendo did not make an announcement at E3…It’s something that I feel would not only make sense from a financial standpoint, but also from a consumer point of view.

Opera: We have a good relationship with Nintendo

“We have good relationship with Nintendo. The recent addition – the DSi browser – has been provided for free on the device and that’s a movement in the right direction. We are very happy about the fact that Opera on Wii is the most used device to browse on televisions – that is the biggest volume of users. We feel the browser is a very good user experience and working with Nintendo was very good. They challenged us and we challenged them and it is clear that they are very focused on making easy to use applications for their products.” – Opera’s von Tetzchner
I haven’t used the Wii Internet Browser much, but I have found that the DSi Browser is nice when I don’t want to lug my laptop into bed. Have you guys used either the Wii or DS Internet browsers much?
