Nintendo of America announces the hiring of a new vice president of Corporate Affairs. Cynthia Gordon, a PR expert with more than 20 years of experience in consumer brands, joins the company on March 14. Gordon comes to Nintendo from her position as a vice president at 360 PUBLIC RELATIONS in Boston, where she developed and executed consumer public relations campaigns and contributed to the advancement of the firm’s social media and digital efforts.

Gordon will work from Nintendo’s office in Redwood City, Calif, and will report to the executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, a vacant position that is currently being managed by Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Update: You can check out Iwata’s direct-quote right here, as well as some comments about the 3DS.

Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has apparently told The Yomiuri Shimbun that gamers shouldn’t expect a Wii successor anytime soon. Iwata pointed out that there are still seven million consoles sold in the United States each year and the console has yet to reach its limit. The Nintendo president mentioned that once developers begin to run out of ideas, it will be possible to start thinking about a new console.

Although an immediate console announcement is unlikely, perhaps Iwata will tease what’s on the horizon for Nintendo at his Game Developers presentation on Wednesday. His keynote is titled “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future”, after all!

This information comes from GDC global brand director Simon Carless…

“We’re happy to have announcements around the show, and this year I’m sure there will be some. These days, publishers tend to have press showcases off-site to make announcements, and that’s fine with us, but GDC is about developers coming together and learning new things. That’s what we concentrate on. Having said that, we are actually very happy to have a big expo floor where announcements are made, and we still have our large keynote addresses which are sometimes announcement-led. This year we have keynotes from companies like Nintendo, who are in a position to announce things if they wish to.”

The Game Developers Conference has seen a shift in the past couple of years, so I’m not exactly sure what to expect… especially after the comments from Mr. Carless! Last year, the GDC staff said that show isn’t a place for announcements, but it looks like they’ve changed their tune this time around. I’m sure there will be a few reveals – possibly from Iwata’s keynote on Wednesday. Just don’t expect too much!

This information comes from Grasshopper’s official blog…

“But this clash of legendary heroes is just the tip of the iceberg! Grasshopper’s taking Grasstream to a new level this year with more interviews, more live music, more guests, and best of all, a new game announcement!”

Hmmm… Suda51 has expressed interest in the 3DS before… Might we see a game announcement for Nintendo’s new handheld? Only time will tell!

Gallery 2 – spoilers

A bunch of Metroid Prime art has been collected from the sites/profiles of numerous Retro Studios, which even includes an image of Kraid (who would have been used in a boss battle). The gallery contains material from all three games in the series. Although some of the images above aren’t concept art, they all epitomize the impressive talents of the staff working on the games. Be warned, though: the second gallery contains art that most would probably consider spoilers… if you haven’t played Prime 3, that is!

The latest edition of Iwata Asks contains an interesting piece of information about one of Namco Bandai’s more esteemed employees. As was revealed in the interview, Ridge Racer 3D producer Yozo Sakagami came very close to working at Konami. Sakagami actually planned on applying to the company, but accidentally dialed Namco Bandai’s number instead as a result of a mix-up with katakana characters. Of course, we now know that the error led to Sakagami’s future with Namco Bandai.

Sakagami: Yes, but I actually wanted to get into KONAMI!

Iwata: Huh?

Sakagami: I was going to apply to KONAMI, but (in Japanese, ) their names are both composed of three katakana characters, so I got confused and applied to NAMCO! (laughs)

Iwata: Are you serious? (laughs)

Sakagami: Yes! A friend of mine was working at KONAMI. I told him I was thinking about getting into the gaming industry and he said I should give it a shot. At the time, KONAMI was headquartered in Kobe.

Iwata: Not far from your home in Nishinomiya.

Sakagami: Right. So I put in a phone call, but got NAMCO instead!

Iwata: (laughs) So if you hadn’t dialed the wrong number, you might not be sitting here today. (laughs)

Sakagami: Maybe not. (laughs)

This information comes from Nintendo UK’s Head of Communications, Rob Saunders, who was asked if positive reactions to the 3DS will mean we’ll see 3D in future Nintendo consoles…

“It’s a good question. The honest answer is that if I told you I’d have to kill you. We’ve had 3D running on past consoles for a number of years and we have had 3D running on the original DS, the Gamecube and the Wii. That’s no secret, we said that at E3 last year, but now it feels like the right time to bring 3D to the market. ‘So ‘never say never’; we’re always working on new consoles and new applications, things like that. We’re always very keen at Nintendo, we always start work on the next home console as soon as the previous one’s released. So we are working on something and we’re always looking at new ideas and new developments, so that work is underway. As to what it pertains to and what it is… Even I don’t know!”

I wouldn’t expect Saunders to know too much about Nintendo’s next home console. However, Satoru Iwata has indicated that 3D functionality could be possible for the Wii’s successor…
