Factor 5’s troubles have been well documented over the past few months, with rumblings of the company being shut down, employees being laid off, and more. The company apparently has been dealing with quite a few issues and have announced that their San Rafael studio has been shut down (via their website). Achim Moller, CEO Factor 5 GmbH, notes that “the obstacles created by the sudden bankrupcy of Brash Entertainment for the continuation of operations have turned out too great to overcome in the current economic climate.”

“We are sorry to announce the closure of the San Rafael-based Factor 5, Inc. studio, but the obstacles created by the sudden bankrupcy of Brash Entertainment for the continuation of operations have turned out too great to overcome in the current economic climate.

Factor 5 GmbH, which has been creating games since 1988 with its headquarter in Cologne, Germany, is entirely unrelated to Factor 5, Inc. and the circumstances surrounding Factor 5 Inc.’s recent challenges. Altough we are saddened by Factor 5 Inc.’s situation, our corporation will remain unaffected by these developments and has partnered with both old and nwe friends in the industry who will reveal our upcoming projects over the next months.

We would like to thank everybody on the publishing and development side who have supported us throughout the last 20 years and continue to do so. The current transition of the games industry is challenging, but as with transitions prior there is more opportunity than ever for independent development out there.”

This is very unfortunate news and it will be interesting to see how the company’s projects are affected. Factor 5 has been rumored to be working on the revivals of both Kid Icarus and Pilotwings.

A few hours ago, news circulated that Nintendo was showing off a new title to select members of the press and apparently, it’s a title that gamers will be interested in. IGN’s Craig Harris has posted another Twitter update, providing followers with a hint on the yet to be revealed project.

“Yo, @craigign here. Try this trick on your Wii: Go to Mii Channel, and press A, B, 1, and hold 2 for five seconds. What’s this?? Hmm…”

On the 45th Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, it was revealed that Nintendo was holding an event with the press which would focus on a secret game. Then on the latest podcast released yesterday, it was reconfirmed that the event would take place today. So just what was at the event? Apparently something that will cause gamers to become “excited” and the good news is that there will be additional news “soon.” Keep in mind that this game has yet to be revealed to the public.

“Yo, @craigign here. Why was I at Nintendo today? I think you’ll be excited when I can talk about it. Soon.” – IGN Craig’s Twitter

All eyes will be watching Nintendo this year when Satoru Iwata, Cammie Dunaway, Reggie Fils-Aime, and other representatives take the stage at this year’s E3. The company’s conference is set for June 2, the day that the expo begins. All of the action will begin at 9:00 AM PST (12:00 EST) and will probably last for an hour or so.

“[Nintendo will continue to go after] Gaming Population Expansion [by] putting smiles on many people’s faces by offering brand new entertainment that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience. [Nintendo hoping the DS will be] a machine that enriches its owner’s daily life. Nintendo’s strategy is to accelerate current sales momentum from ‘must-have for every family’ to ‘must-have for everyone.’ [The DS is supposed to be a] must-have for everyone [the Wii is planned to be] a machine that puts smiles on surrounding people’s face’ [while encouraging communication among family members in the living room and offering enjoyment of their] new life with Wii. In the challenging and competitive gaming industry, which consistently requires new and innovative products, Nintendo will strive to expand its business and increase revenue and profit by capitalizing on being the only hardware platform producer with powerful in-house software development teams.”

“Not a day goes by without somebody asking us for a new Rayman game… He’ll be back for more imaginative and fantastic adventures of his own before you know it, but not in RGH, which takes place among Humans… But rest assured that the Rabbids and Rayman are still B.E.F. (Best Enemies Forever). They’ll no doubt meet again.” – Go Home’s creative director, Jacques Exertier

Though I personally believe it was a smart move to leave Rayman out of Rabbids Go Home, I would like to see the character return at some point in the future. Rayman has given us some fantastic games, after all.

“If we could, maybe. I think part of the problem is all the major physics and the dismemberment, and things like that. I want to stay true to the vision of Dead Space, and that is about dismemberment, zero G, and stuff like that. We’d have to make some compromises that I am not willing to make yet.” – Glen Schofield, head of EA’s Visceral Games

In this case, I have to agree with Schofield. For the best Dead Space experience, the franchise should most likely be left on consoles. That could change in the future, though.
