Asahi Shimbun says they didn’t misinterpret Iwata

“The article quoted Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s comment accurately.” – Asahi Shimbun statement
Looks like this is turning into a real mess. First the Asahi Shimbum conducted an interview with Iwata, who apparently said that the next DS “[will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing.” However, as we know, Nintendo of America said that Iwata was misinterpreted and that he “did not make any comments regarding the functions of Nintendo’s future hardware systems.” Who should we believe?

EEDAR believes Nintendo will announce DS2 sometime in the next few months
Posted on 15 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in DS, News | 3 Comments
“Even though the Nintendo DS posted a record year in 2009, EEDAR expects Nintendo to make an official announcement on the DS2 within the next eight months.
Nintendo has always had a controlling stake in the handheld market, despite facing numerous competitors, and EEDAR believes one of the biggest reasons for Nintendo’s success in the handheld market is their ability to remove opportunity gaps for competitors to enter. Nintendo’s transition from the GBA to the DS, a year earlier than anticipated, was a brilliant strategy to remove any upper hand the Sony PSP could have by being first to market.
Piracy continues to be an issue, not just for Nintendo, but for its third-party publishers as well. Whilst the release of the DSi has slowed down piracy, that slow down will only be temporary as hackers have already managed to bypass the new security systems built into the hardware.
Additionally, many publishers including Sega, Capcom, and now UbiSoft have all expressed that they may be reducing their exposure to Nintendo’s consoles, which will likely lead to heavy declines in both hardware and software sales for the Nintendo DS.
We believe that due to the aging technology, the possibility of new competitors in 2011, a decline in publisher support and piracy, Nintendo will launch a successor to the DS within the next 15 months, and likely announce such in the next eight months.
Of course, this should not discourage anyone from buying new DS software, as any DS successor will most likely be backwards compatible.” – EEDAR analysis

The Nintendo DSi XL just received a confirmed European release date today and the system will also be launching in North America this year. I personally think that it’d be too soon for Nintendo to announce a true DS successor, but I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised. What do you guys think?
Nintendo responds to NPD data, finishes 2009 with multiple sales records

Wii Has the Best Month in Video Game History, Nintendo DS Has the Best Calendar Year of All Time
A holiday shopping frenzy helped both of Nintendo’s video game systems make history: Nintendo’s Wii™ home system sold more than 3.8 million units in December, a new all-time single-month U.S. sales record. The Nintendo DS™ Lite and Nintendo DSi™ hand-held systems combined to sell more than 3.3 million, the second biggest month in U.S. history.
Those strong December numbers helped propel the Nintendo DS franchise to more than 11.2 million sold in 2009, a new U.S. calendar-year sales record for any video game system – ever. The Wii console finished 2009 with 9.6 million sold. Of all the Wii consoles ever sold in the United States since its November 2006 launch, nearly one-fifth (18.7 percent) were sold during November and December 2009.
