Wii

Former IGN Nintendo Team editor Daemon Hatfield is receiving quite a bit of backlash for a few harsh Wii comments on a recent Game Scoop! podcast. Mr. Hatfield moved to a different section of IGN a few weeks ago, but he still contributes to the Nintendo scene with occasional contributions such as reviews.

You can check out a portion of what was said on the podcast below, although to obtain a better understanding of the situation, we recommend that you listen to the podcast.

“Because the Wii is stupid, Levi. No, because any games that are coming out for the Wii are going to be dumb.Yeah, the Wii is stupid. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be another great game that should be controlled with dual analog sticks…I know. Like even when they make a great game like Mario Galaxy I don’t want to hold the Wii remote. It’s stupid.”

There have been a number of Wii fans that were upset by Daemon’s words and opinions regarding the podcast have picked up a bit over the last few days (including message board topics and reader mail on the latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast). In response, Daemon wrote a blog post explaining his stance (full post here).

“On the IGN podcasts you’ll find the editors at their most relaxed, casual, and honest. It is, in fact, the perfect environment for me to share my opinion that the Wii is stupid. And that’s all it is: my opinion. What do you care if i think it’s stupid? I’m not pushing an agenda. I’m not trying to take your Wii away from you. If you’re happy with your Wii, that’s great.”

“…We do feel the pressure to continue to make great games. One of the great things about High Voltage is the passion. The teams here are some of most dedicated people that I have ever worked with and I am continually impressed by how much quality work they deliver. This passion is what drives our studio and recently we have only seen it increase. More than anything, we want to be known as the studio that makes fun games that push the perceived limits. Although we have accomplished a lot over the past 16 years, it really feels like we just graduated and now it is time to apply what we’ve learned and prove we are great developer. We are only just getting started. We have so much more we want to do…We want people to play the game because we think that anyone who does is going to enjoy the experience. As to sales estimates, we humbly hope it outsells every game ever made. [laughs] Seriously, we sincerely hope we have earned Wii owner’s support in our efforts. The more support we receive, the more we will funnel those profits into even better original games for them.” – Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Office of High Voltage Software

I really feel like High Voltage will emerge as one of the more prominent Wii developers over the next few years. Being able to create The Conduit was a huge opportunity for the company. HVS didn’t exactly have the best track record in the past, but they’re doing a lot to reinvent themselves.

Shia LaBeouf, an actor in the upcoming Transformers film, has stated that he is not a big Wii fan. In fact, he’s went as far as to say that it is “kind of an amateur console.” But that isn’t stopping his co-star, Megan Fox, from expressing her interest in the system.

Fox has shared that she is “totally a fan of the Wii.” Even though she says that “not good at it,” Wii Fit is in her collection. Apparently it’s a pretty hard workout.

“I’m totally a fan of the Wii, I’m just not good at it. I actually have a Wii Fit and it’s actually a really hard workout. It’s pretty interesting. I think it’s amazing you can combine exercise and gaming. There really are games like Raving Rabbids and there are these little missions that you have to do where you run. You’re running with your arms but I swear to God I was so out of breath after every time I completed a mission. It really gets your cardio workout and it’s a video game, which sounds crazy. But I think that’s amazing. I hope we keep heading in that direction…I love Lego Star Wars [on Wii]. You can play in tandem. Except the one thing I don’t like about that game is that if one person is lagging behind and wants to check something out, and you’re running ahead, you drag the screen with you. You can’t stay separate when you’re playing on a team together. That becomes annoying.”

“There will be a new version of the game with the new name in the next days. That’s the only change. It has to do with a trademark claim by another videogame company. We are a small indie developer and could not fight for our rights.” – Over The Top CEO Rob Alvarez de Lara

This is all of the information we have for now. The new name for Icarian has been changed to NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits.

“That was our publisher’s decision to do that [creating seperate Wii version]. And I think that it’s a good decision because I don’t think direct ports to the Wii work…The key selling point for the Wii is the Wii controls. You should build your game round that. The weakness for the Wii is the graphical and processing technology, which is last-gen. So you have to custom tailor your game to best use of the Wii’s strengths, which is the Wii-mote. I don’t think you can do that with a direct port.” – Lennart Sas, Creative Director at Triumph Studios

In most instances, I’d prefer developers to create unique experiences for the Wii. It just makes more sense when you think about it…Building a Wii game from the ground up can allow developers to get the most out of the hardware.

Shigeru Miyamoto has stressed in numerous interviews that he wishes to include Wii MotionPlus in Link’s first true outing on Nintendo’s console. In fact, he has gone as far as to say that there’s a good chance the game will require the peripheral. But believe it or not, Miyamoto has also said that he is the only one asking for MotionPlus support in the game.

“One thing that I will tell you that I have made a request of the team is I really want to work with Wii MotionPlus. That being said, right now I’m the only one who is asking for that. Wii MotionPlus is something that would really lend itself well to new Link.”

I really must say that I am surprised by this. You would think that a good majority of the development team would be interested in at least experimenting with it…Who wouldn’t want more accurate sword controls?
