Wii

“I think it is true that new information penetrates through the Japanese market very quickly and that Japanese people tend to get tired of something new very quickly. It is also true that the population is smaller when compared with that of other major markets, so it is inevitable that the market starts to feel saturated earlier than others. I don’t think any hardware can enjoy eternal life. Someday, we’ll need a new platform for sure, and of course, Nintendo is always preparing for that. However, now that our customer base has expanded this drastically, we do not think it’s appropriate to conclude that past platform lifecycle theory can or should be applied to the current generation.” – Satoru Iwata

“Third party titles sold more [in the U.S.] on Nintendo hardware than on any other platform for two consecutive months. As the hardware expands the installed bases, we are starting to see a cycle where more titles from the third parties are making the million-seller list.” – Satoru Iwata

It would be rather silly for Nintendo to release a new console at this point, but that’s just stating the obvious. I can actually see the Wii remaining on the market for quite some time.

New MadWorld trailer

The Need for Speed franchise is far from dead. EA has announced a couple of new Need for Speed titles and one of those games – Need for Speed: Nitro – will be releasing for the Wii and DS. Nitro is being developed by EA Montreal with fast and fun arcade gameplay in mind. Expect vibrant and eye-catching visuals as well.

“Need for Speed Nitro on the Wii and DS will not be a Mario Kart clone – Nintendo already does an excellent job with that…Instead, we are evolving the arcade racer with a fresh and unique visual style that is very Need for Speed. The game will be rich and deep and will appeal to experienced arcade racers as well as casual players…What you’ll see is that Nitro in no way resembles any other previous Need for Speed title. [It’s] still too early [to discuss multiplayer details].” – EA marketing boss Keith Munro

The Brand New Title from The Sims Studio Encourages You to Run the Wild
REDWOOD CITY, CA — January 21, 2009 —Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) will releases SimAnimals™ for the Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ to store shelves today. SimAnimals challenges you to engage, touch, move and try to control a wide range of wild animals as you journey deeper and deeper into the forest. You control an on-screen animated hand that allows you to reach out and touch, pick up and move everything in the game from foxes and bears to trees and flowers. Cohabitate with these animals in their natural surroundings, and based on how you treat them, the animals will come to know and love – or dislike you! Have fun developing relationships with wild animals and their families, and experience the humor and drama of surviving in the wilderness.

“We are thrilled to release SimAnimals, our brand new title from The Sims Studio, which we feel defines a brand new category of animal video games” said Sam Player, Executive Producer for SimAnimals. “SimAnimals utilizes the Wii remote and the Nintendo DS stylus to create an immersive and tactile experience that allows you to easily and intuitively become part of the wood’s expressive, quirky and sometimes surprising action. We can’t wait to see what types of stories our players are going to tell using animals instead of people as their actors.”

This release list is a bit troublesome for North America right now…Still no Disaster: Day of Crisis, no word on Another Code R or NPC! Metroid Prime. On the bright side, it looks like Kirby Wii is still in development. Keep in mind that this list is not 100% definitive and does not show all of Nintendo’s releases for this year.
