Crysis Remastered

The Switch version of Crysis Remastered is nearly here, as the game is set to launch tomorrow. Digital Foundry has examined the game in great detail, revealing that overall, Crytek and Saber Interactive have done an admirable job.

Here are the notable tidbits:

– More in line with the PS3/360 versions than the PC release
– That means a reduction in geometry on certain key objects, removal of certain visual techniques, and no Ascension mission
– There are still dramatic changes and improvements over the previous console versions
– Dynamic resolution on Switch with temporal upscaling
– 720p is the average resolution
– Rare 540p and lower situations during busy scenes
– Can also go higher than 720p when docked
– Shadow maps reduced in portable mode
– Tweaks made to lighting
– Sparse voxel based global illumination implemented on Switch for more realistic indirect lighting
– New lighting model more closely resembles PC version
– Post-processing suite has been enhanced
– Cinematic depth-of-field enhanced
– Destroying objects can temporarily impact performance
– Destroying vegetation updates at a lower frame rate on Switch
– Foliage density more in line with the PC game compared to last-gen console port
– Fidelity of shadow maps lower on Switch compared to PC version
– Flashlight shadows still present, but absent from the first stage
– Parallax occlusion maps gone on Switch due to handheld limitations, but could return for docked play in a future patch
– Water rendering improved
– Rendering of underwater areas have largely removed rocks and plants
– Frame rate stutter/persistence issues with 16 millisecond spikes
– Usually hits 30 frames per second, improved over last-gen console releases
– When the action heats up, there can be dips
– Frame rate similar in portable mode
