iOS 16.1 adds support for Nintendo Switch Online controllers
Apple has released a new version 16.1 update for its iOS platform, and interestingly enough, there’s a bit of news for Switch owners.
Nintendo Switch Online classic controllers are now supported. Thus far we have confirmation that the SNES and N64 devices work, though we’re waiting to hear if the news also applies to NES and SEGA Genesis. Right now it’s assumed that all of the Switch Online controllers are compatible.
Developer developer Steve Troughton-Smith shared the discovery on social media yesterday. You can get a quick look at it in action below.

The functionality is possible with the Game Controller framework on macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16 and later. Users will notice that the controller appears in Bluetooth settings when in pairing mode. Of course, just make sure that you’ve updated to the latest iOS version.
At the end of July, Steam added support for Switch NES, SNES, N64, and SEGA Genesis controllers. Not too long later, the service began rolling out functionality for the Switch Joy-Con that could be used individually as a mini-gamepad or combined into pairs.
