Let’s Talk #45: What are you playing? – April 2016

A new month is here! We entered April last week, so that means we want to know what you’ve been playing. Have you started up something entirely new for the month? Or maybe you’re continuing something you started a little while back? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Early Miitomo and My Nintendo thoughts

Mr Ninty

I still dont have any friends on miitome, but im quite satisfied with the game/answers. I generally hate mobile apps, but since it is deeply connected to MYNintendo i will continue to get all the rewards.
I agree with the rest that the MYnintendo rewards expire to quickly, but that is also the only thing wrong with the entire programme. Okay so far there are no downloadcodes for physical game, but im sure that will be included within this year

My favorite things about Miitomo is that reaction images are perfectly valid responses to answers and how the Miis talking to each other in comment threads are like something out of Arthur.

I don’t like how it encourages people to add others from other countries, but weirdly the text-to-speech engine in the non-Japanese versions doesn’t even attempt to read Japanese text. I have people who live in Japan as friends and Miitomo internally changes all foreign glyphs to the letter A, so their answers are all just repeated As. Why does a Japanese game not read Japanese?

And now that I’ve gotten more than 15 friends, it’s becoming real hard telling the Miis apart. You only get to see one mutual friend out of however many you actually have, so when the one friend you have in common that you get as a clue is Mike, you don’t know which one because you have multiple Mikes spelled the same.

No joke folks, you really do learn things about your friends from this. Things you would never think to bring up, and in turn, more conversations end up happening betwee my friends and I that stem from the random topics Miitomo provides. I’ve been having old friends add me and then referencing inside jokes we used to have, this is just a wonderful app, I check it every day, and I feel it will become a daily thing. I’m very excited to see what Miitomo turns out to be, and now I’m definitely excited for their next apps. I never used to be excited even a smidge.

It was great at first, but after a day I am already bored of it. It needs some fleshing out and I am sure Nintendo will put out an update to add more content – until then I will hardly touch it.

I got Miitomo downloaded (took a bit of doing), I like the concept but I see a few issues with it. 1) is that it seems to run a bit slow (loading times are a bit longer than I like), 2) is that I don’t know if I’ll find friends to use it with which is pretty important (my main gaming buds would probably not be interested in the Question Answer style, and logging onto it in a regular fashion), and 3) the clothing items cost waaay too much in terms of coins.

Per 3), imo Miitomo should inspire people with the clothing to use the app, but at those prices it would take too long (playing for free) to buy most of the things I would want. I get that they want people to diversify their clothing options, but the climb to that is too steep for most casual users of the app, imo. It’d be better if it was closer to animal crossing, in that clothing is cheap, but there’s so many items (and it changes over time / daily) and that is what encourages people to keep playing. Here, items may change daily, but what good is it if you can only afford 2-3 costumes and then have to wait like a week to buy another? All the other items just pass you by. Is what it feels like anyway. Maybe if I used it more I’d see otherwise, but +15 coin accrual on items that cost 1000+ is just not working for me numbers-wise. It’d help if I had Miitomo activity / friends to inspire interaction with the app, so maybe it will improve after that.

Per rewards, I haven’t looked at the specifics, but it seems like most things are too costly to be worthwhile (and if the expiration date on coins is really so short as 6 months, yeah…that ain’t happening unless you’re dropping inordinate amounts of time/cash on the app or nintendo digital products).

They really should make badge tries (from Nintendo Badge Arcade) as part of the reward system, those can be cheap and it’d be popular

Miitomo has become an addiction to me rather quickly, it’s actually pretty fun to use and mess around with. My friend’s list quickly built up, and looking through all of the answers that range from funny to strange to serious is a ton of fun and great way to learn about all of the people you know. I honestly can’t wait to see what else may get added to it in the future, because I’m hooked.

As for My Nintendo, I’m very satisfied with that too! I actually picked myself up a copy of WarioWare: Touched and it’s such a blast from the past, so much fun to get back into that series. Everything is quick and simple and connects with all of my other social hubs to make things super easy. It also automatically sends out any downloadable game out to my systems so that I can have the game downloading without putting in any codes or even going to the eshop in general.

I’d say that as a whole, My Nintendo is looking very promising and I can’t wait to see what comes next for the platform.
