[Let’s Talk] What are you playing? – August 2016

Posted on August 6, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

A new month is here! We’ve just entered August, so that means we want to know what you’ve been playing. Have you started up something entirely new for the month? Or maybe you’re continuing something you started a little while back? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition

My video gaming started with the Atari 2600 (then VCS) followed by ColecoVision. There was a dead time that followed, and then a couple years after the Coleco system, I was visiting the store where my mother worked, Venture- I was about 15 or 16 at the time. I happened to see the NES on display running Super Mario Bros and my jaw dropped because it looked *exactly* like the arcade game I had been putting quarters/tokens into. Even at the not-so-cute age I was, I was able to convince the folks to put one under the tree. The one my brother and I received was just the control deck, but as it turned out the deluxe set would not have been worth it because the R.O.B. robot was not successful, and I think my brother and I would have been a bit old for it anyway. Some time later we did get the Zapper though.

I am considering picking one of these up as a Christmas gift for my brother, but I am not really interested myself. I am fully capable of emulating the system, but I don’t, and I have one of those bootleg NES-on-a-chip systems (9999-in-1 or something like that, though obviously it is really like 60-in-1 with the games repeated over and over) that I also don’t touch. This has much better games than that bootleg system, but I fear it would also go untouched. However, should an SNES Classic follow (hopefully we won’t be left waiting until *its* 30th anniversary) I would strongly lean toward purchasing that for myself as I never owned one back in the day, and the 16-bit games still hold up well today.

The idea of a miniature NES that fits in your pocket and comes with 30 of the best titles for the system preloaded on the device is very appealing, it’d be cool if we could use an SD card to add more games (like Startropics 2 which sadly isn’t included) but Nintendo is probably afraid it could be used for illegal emulation essentially killing VC sales

It’s still a great deal, Castlevania 2 sucks but the rest are top-quality games and Ice Climber, Double Dragon, Dr. Mario, Super C (why is Super C included but not Contra? come on Konami!) and Bubble Bobble are all great to play with a friend 🙂

I’ve played most of NES games repeatedly throughout the years,
So most of these games I own on NES (I have the Model 2 NES from a toys r us from 1995), or got on Wii shop channel (haven’t bothered upgrading them to eshop versions, don’t care about spending extra money on them). This mini NES, is a wonderful idea. If it gets my coworkers that never talk about games to mention it to me, it means the advertising and idea is brilliant, in my book.

As great of an idea this is though, I don’t see a need to purchase games I already have on Wii or my NES that I have revisited countless times through the years. So I will pass on this, but what I am very interested in, is the sold seperately NES controllers compatible with Wii remotes. I would very much like to buy those to play the NES Games I already have on Wii. So it’s nice I still get to benefit from The NES Mini’s release by its special controllers! Good move Nintendo!
