Nintendo Switch Online N64 update out now (version 2.3.1)
The N64 app for Nintendo Switch Online has been updated, with users now being able to access version 2.3.1. It’s intended to address one specific issue.
Kirby 64 was added to Nintendo Switch Online as part of the Expansion Pack service earlier this month. But soon after its release, players encountered a game-breaking bug. After being hit by certain damage sources in the water, they become stunned indefinitely. Their only option was to quit the level as they couldn’t proceed. We have more information about the whole situation here.
Thankfully, the 2.3.1 update for the Nintendo Switch Online N64 app fully address the issue found within Kirby 64. OatmealDome, who is known for his datamining discoveries, shared the following on Twitter:
[NSO – Nintendo 64] Version 2.3.1 is out with the bug fix for Kirby 64. That’s about it. Technical details! The bug may have originated in N’s AOT recompiler for MIPS -> aarch64, since the only files updated were the AOT .nro and .pcb.
Interestingly, switchbrew says the NRO isn’t used, but those were the only files changed (not even the emulator main executable).
The good news here is that Nintendo was relatively quick to address the problem, and has shown again that it is willing to make improvements to classic games it offers through Switch Online. It follows the likes of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Paper Mario that were patched after release.
