creepiest pokedex entries

Today, we’re taking a look at the creepiest Pokedex entries in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet plus a few of the returning Pokemon in The Indigo Disk DLC.

To an extent, Pokedex entries have always been kind of messed up. But things took a turn sometime around Pokemon Sun and Moon – lots of Pokemon started getting particularly eyebrow-raising descriptions. For example, if Drifloon’s body were to burst, its soul would spill out with a screaming sound. We definitely didn’t need to know that!

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Creepiest Pokedex Entries

Creepiest Pokedex Entries

Minior’s Pokedex Entry

  • Scarlet: Minior that fall to the ground try to return to space, but their wish will not come true – all they can do is fade away.
  • Violet: It will react when touched or called to, but it’s unknown whether such responses indicate consciousness.

We’re starting off our big list with Minior, a fan favorite of sorts introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon. When his shell breaks off, he’s just a happy little guy who likes to spin, right? Apparently not! According to Scarlet’s Pokedex entry, it wishes to return to its home in outer space, but it can’t gather the energy it needs to fly all the way up there. With nothing else to do, it dissolves and fades away. You might be wondering why we’re so specific with that description – that’s because a Pokemon anime episode actually reinforces these entries. Yikes.

Galarian Slowbro

  • Scarlet: Shellder seems blissful over the taste of Slowbro even though the toxins seeping from the bite have caused Shellder to faint.
  • Violet: Shellder bites down hard on Slowbro’s arm to suck out more poison. This seems to cause itching, so Slowbro occasionally lashes out.

Galarian Slowbro definitely isn’t the most popular Pokemon out there, so its entries have sort of flown under the radar. Unfortunately, according to both its Scarlet and Violet descriptions, Galarian Slowbro does not live a life of luxury. That Shellder on its arm is both unconscious and addicted to poison to such an extent that it causes Galarian Slowbro discomfort. If we just left Galarian Slowpoke alone, it wouldn’t have to deal with this!

Palossand

  • Violet: From the hollows in its arms, it fires the bones of its victims, which are all dried up after being drained of their vitality.

Palossand’s Pokedex entries have always been disturbing, but Violet’s Pokedex entry takes it up to another level. In past games, we’ve learned that Palossand likes to trap small Pokemon deep underneath the sand, where it keeps them prisoner and slowly drains it life force. Okay. But now we know that draining its life force isn’t a temporary thing – it reduces its prey to a pile of bones and then launches them into the air like some sort of twisted celebration when it’s all done.

More Pokedex Entries

More of the Creepiest Pokedex Entries: Spoink

  • Scarlet: Spoink will die if it stops bouncing. The pearl on its head amplifies its psychic powers.
  • Violet: Using its tail like a spring, it keeps its heart beating by bouncing constantly. If it stops, it dies.

This one’s a classic! Spoink’s Pokedex entry has always stated it would die if it stopped bouncing, and Scarlet and Violet just reinforce that. This means Spoink can never eat, sleep, or do anything at all in peace. It has to keep bouncing until it eventually evolves into Grumpig at Level 32.

Jumpluff

  • Scarlet: Jumpluff travels on seasonal winds. Once its cotton spores run out, its journey ends, as does its life.

If we’re talking about Spoink, we have to talk about Jumpluff too. Apparently, when Jumpluff catches a spring breeze and floats about to spread its cotton spores, it’s actually at the end of its life. Once it loses all its spores, it’s done for. Past Pokedex entries do mention that Jumpluff likes spreading its spores in the wind, but Pokemon Scarlet decided to add this horrible little detail in its description for the first time.

Cryogonal

  • Scarlet: Cryogonal appear during cold seasons. It is said that people and Pokemon who die on snowy mountains are reborn into these Pokemon.

People turning into Pokemon when they die is nothing new, but this is the first time we’ve seen this detail spoken of in reference to Cryogonal. Next time you see one, keep in mind that it may have once been human. That fact alone puts this up there as one of the creepiest Pokedex entries!

Creepiest Pokedex Entries

More of the Creepiest Pokedex Entries: Poltchageist

  • Scarlet: Supposedly, the regrets of a tea ceremony master who died before perfecting his craft lingered in some matcha and became a Pokemon.

Here we’ve got another case of people turning into Pokemon (we’ll go light on these for the rest of the list). According to more of Poltchageist’s Pokedex entries, it tries to trick victims into drinking its tea to try and steal their souls. Apparently, this doesn’t work out for Poltchageist very well, because its victims rarely fall for it.

Hattrem

  • Scarlet: To this Pokemon, strong emotions apparently feel like incredibly loud noises — even if the emotions are happy ones.
  • Violet: The moment this Pokemon finds someone who’s emitting strong emotions, it will pummel them senseless with its braids to silence them.

Hattrem doesn’t seem to like loud noises, and unfortunately, any emotions felt by others are especially noisy to it. Apparently, it runs as fast as it can using its braids as legs before following up with a string of punches.

Basculegion

  • Scarlet: This Pokemon is cloaked in the souls of its comrades who perished during a punishing journey to the river of their birth.
  • Violet: It can afflict a target with terrifying illusions that are under its control. The deeper the sadness in its friends’ souls, the paler Basculegion becomes.

White-Stripe Basculin evolves into Basculegion when it takes about 300 HP’s worth of recoil damage. When it does evolve, it becomes a Water/Ghost-type. We know the Ghost type is there to represent the souls of its comrades, but Pokemon Violet really didn’t need to add that little detail! According to its Pokedex entry, the souls that make up Basculegion are implied to be somewhat conscious and their emotions affects how Basculegion looks.
