Pokemon Sword and Shield becomes series’ second best-selling entry

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are now the franchise’s second best-selling entry ever, the latest sales figures from Nintendo confirm.

In May 2020, it ranked fourth. In August of that year, it had already moved up another slot to be in the third position.

According to Nintendo, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield have sold 23.90 million copies. That means it has surpassed Pokemon Gold and Silver, which ended their run at 23.70 million units.

Nintendo also reported this week that Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl have sold 14 million copies thus far. They’re further down the list, but will likely continue climbing the chart over time.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield released for Switch in November 2019. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl just came out in November 2021.
