Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin publisher Marvelous has updated their Japanese site to give an overview for the title’s rice farming mechanics. Check out a translation, courtesy of Gematsu, and videos below:
■ Planting
Plowing the Rice Field
The process of removing rocks and plowing the rice field with your hoe to prepare an environment where rice can easily grow. The better you plow, the better the rice-plant’s roots will spread and grow.
Sorting the Seed Rice
The process of sorting the seed rice. Mix mud and salt into the bucket the seed rice is sunk to float and remove the lighter weight and lower quality seed rice. But be careful as this will lower your yield.
Raising Seedlings
The process of raising the sorted seed rice into a seedling box and growing them into seedlings. There is dense seeding in which many seedlings grow but at lesser quality, and sparse seeding in which less seedlings grow but at better quality.
Planting the Rice
The process of planting the raised seedlings in the rice field. If the spacing between seedlings is too close or too far apart, it may have a negative effect on the rice-plant’s growth.
Handing Off the Work
You can entrust some farm work such as plowing the rice field and planting the rice to your in-game companions. However, since the quality of the work will be lower, the quality and yield will also be low.
Helper Animals
Animals can help with the farm work. Ducks can eat the harmful insects in the rice field to protect the rice-plants from disease, and cows can help plow the field.
■ Raising
Watering
The process of using waterways to control the amount and temperature of water in the rice field. The better the water management according to the growth rate of the rice-plants and the day’s weather, the better the rice-plants will grow.
Fertilizing
The process of spreading the compost fermented by mixing various materials into a fertilizer tank to nourish the soil in the rice field. By sowing the compost, you can counter the outbreak of disease and harmful insects.
Weeding
The process of removing the weeds that grew in the rice field. Weeds grow over time, so remove them often to nourish the rice-plants.
Improving Your Rice Farming Abilities
Through repeated farm work, Sakuna’s farming abilities will improve. This will allow for more efficient rice farming such as growing many seedlings at once or faster harvesting.
Rice Farming Meetings
In addition to checking the condition of the rice field, you can also pray to change the weather. Also, by meeting predetermined conditions, you may receive a “Farming Book” that contains the secrets to rice farming.
■ Harvesting
Harvesting the Rice-Plant
The process of using a sickle to harvest the rice-plants. Draining the water before harvesting the rice will make it easier to dry when hanging it on the rice rack.
Drying the Rice-Plant
The process of drying the harvested rice-plants. Since the rice-plants are full of moisture after harvesting, you must dry it properly to turn it into delicious rice.
Threshing the Rice-Plant
The process of removing the unhulled rice from the ends of the rice-plants using tools such as a comb-shaped hand thresher.
Hulling the Rice
The process of removing the rice husks and turning the unhulled rice into rice using tools such as a wooden mortar. The more you polish the rice, the closer it becomes to white rice and the better its quality, but the lesser its nutritional value when used as an ingredient.
Ability Growth
As a child of the harvest god, Sakuna’s abilities will improve in proportion to the quality and quantity of rice she harvests. She may also acquire new skills as she grows.
Rice Trade
If your yield exceeds a certain amount, you can trade your rice to obtain materials from the gods of the spirit world.
