Sakurai on Kid Icarus: Uprising controls, still interested in re-release, more
Masahiro Sakurai published a new video on his YouTube channel today about Kid Icarus: Uprising, which goes over the game’s development and he touches on aspects such as the controls. Additionally, he once again expressed interest in seeing a re-release, though that would be “difficult”.
Sakurai starts out by going over the initial history, with late president Satoru Iwata asking him to provide input about the 3DS’ specs and create a game for the hardware. He wanted to develop something for the core audience and ended up going with a third-person shooter. Kid Icarus was chosen due to demand for a new title and Pit’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Not everyone loved the controls in Kid Icarus: Uprising, with Sakurai stating “it’s a rather unique control scheme that takes some getting used to,” though he feels “it’s a great way to feel in control of the action.” Sakurai actually wishes the team could have implemented full support for the Circle Pad Pro to allow dual analog controls, but that wasn’t possible as the game was already pushing 3DS to its limits.
Sakurai previously said last year that “it sure would be nice to play Kid Icarus: Uprising on a home console”. In today’s video, he said: “It’s a shame that it’s only lived on 3DS, as I’d love to play on a bigger screen with smoother graphics, but without a team around to work on it, crafting a follow-up seems difficult.”
