Sakurai talks Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS differences
Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and 3DS will have some differences, mainly when it comes to visuals and stages included in both versions. However, the development team is looking to include the same rosters in both titles.
According to director Masahiro Sakurai:
“Fundamentally we’re going to have the same characters on both systems. If there was a character you couldn’t play on Wii U but you could play on 3DS, or vice versa, that’s rough for consumers. So we want players to be able to have the same character experiences on both devices.”
By making Smash Bros. similar on Wii U and 3DS, players will still be able to have the same kinds of experiences. Sakurai personally just hopes players enjoy themselves, no matter which version(s) they choose.
“I don’t have a preference whether they own the Wii U version or the 3DS version or both versions. It’s sort of like what I talk about with the game creation philosophy itself – I really want the end user, the game player themselves, to find what they like and really just go with that.”
On the topic of graphics, Smash Bros. for Wii U will offer “increased fidelity and detail”, giving the team “the ability to create things on a bigger scale”.
“From an artistic standpoint, when we’re looking at these high detail environments that we’re creating, we now have to go in and work on all of those little things, because as you can see, if you don’t put in the attention to detail they look flat and lifeless.”
Finally, Sakurai shared a few words on including Brawl’s dream of levels in Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS. Because two platforms are involved, there are a few limitations.
“If we did do that, stuff that was on Wii would have to be altered to be put on a 3DS. You’d have to make some tweaks. Whether or not you’d do that and still do those justice remains to be seen. We’re going to have to look at that.”
