Sonic the Hedgehog spinoff series Knuckles first plot tidbits, casting news
Original (4/17): New details have surfaced about the live-action Knuckles series based on the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movies, including a couple of plot tidbits and the cast. Production has now kicked off in London.
Variety reports that the show is set between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The site adds that Knuckles “agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”
Idris Elba will be back again as Knuckles, which was previously reported. We’re also hearing that Adam Pally (“Happy Endings,” “The Mindy Project”) will have a starring role, again playing the role of Wade Whipple from the films.
Edi Patterson (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Julian Barratt (“Mindhorn”), Scott Mescudi (“Don’t Look Up”), and Ellie Taylor (“Ted Lasso”) will have recurring roles. Rory McCann (“Game of Thrones”) and will Tika Sumpter will guest star. There’ll be other casting news in the future.
Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler will direct the pilot episode, and he’ll serve as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film and Toru Nakahara, along with Elba. Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker will be directing episodes. Paramount Pictures and SEGA of America produce.
John Whittington, who worked on the screenplay for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, wrote the pilot and is also head writer and executive producer. Other writers include Brian Schacter and James Madejski.
The Knuckles series does not yet have a premiere date. Meanwhile, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will debut on December 20, 2024.
Update (6/14): More casting news has surfaced. Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel will all be part of the show. Specific character details have not yet been shared.
