Switch update 16.1.0

Nintendo is back with a new firmware update for Switch, and version 16.1.0 is starting to go live for all users.

We’re in the twilight stage of the system’s lifecycle, so it may not come as much of a surprise that no new functionality has been added. Once again, Nintendo is highlighting stability improvements.

Here’s the official rundown:

  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.

The writing has probably been on the wall given some of the more recent firmware updates. For almost the entire year, Nintendo’s patch notes for previous upgrades have the same – again, it’s been all about stability. The only exception was the 16.0.0 update in February, which also made it so user nicknames that cannot be used are replaced with “???” which can be updated from the profile settings. March 2022 was the last time we saw something significant with the “Groups” feature.

If you’re interested in downloading today’s update immediately, you can visit the system settings, access the “System” tab, and select the “System Update” option. It shouldn’t take long to download given the lack of major changes and features here. Note that for most users, version 16.0.0 will download automatically and you’ll eventually receive a notice prompt about installing it.
