Bloodstained bringing out the main game first followed by additional content

Posted on May 6, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U

There’s a lot involved with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. On top of the base game, last years’ Kickstarter reached stretch goals for features like various modes, local co-op, and more.

How will Bloodstained go about bringing out all of its content? It sounds like the team will be adopting a staggered release, meaning we’ll see the base game first followed by additional content. That should help avoid a major wait, and the experience will be kept fresh over time with new features.

That’s great! I wouldn’t mind waiting but it feels good having the game earlier that way.

A good idea to begin with made seemingly BRILLIANT by the waffling on release dates of MN9 due to online components that could have been easily added after release. I do hope that they get the prequel game for handhelds out in short order, though.

Kind of reminds me of Shovel Knight, getting the main game out there and adding more features as time goes on (slowly, but I have no doubt the other things are on their way). It seems like the most practical thing to do to get these games out as soon as possible, without rushing to get a lot of things finished.

I was going to say the same thing. It’s the best way to do things, but Shovel Knight’s developers might not have known what they were in for, doing 3 more routes which take them like a year each. It’s a good thing the game sold so well.

It’s a great thing when you consider the devs position at the time of the games release. From what I recall them mentioning at a game awards show, they had apparently maxed out their credit cards to get the game finished. I can only imagine what it’s like for the devs at Yacht Club Games looking back. They went from a small dev group sending their baby out into the world, and it’s gained a considerable following, with amiibo production to boot.

As for scheduling, yeah, I have no doubt that they kind of went in over their heads with all of the extra planned content. I can’t blame them though, it’s impossible to really know what kind of snags you may or may not hit when making a game. I imagine it’s usually like this with some types of game development, only with the ever looming eye of the people who donated to help develop it. So… no pressure or anything, lol.

Sounds fair. I donated a fair amount to help make the Wii U version happen, so I hope this will be good.

Great. Another game talking about DLC before the game has even arrived. It’s sad in some ways what gaming has become.

“Bloodstained is going to be a huge game. As such, there have been questions as to how all the content will be released. Some indie games, such as Shovel Knight, have opted for a staggered content release – the main game launches first and then over the months new content follows (the Plague of Shadows DLC from late last year being a prime example). Azure Striker Gunvolt for Steam was similar in that Inticreates made 6 months of additional content for the game after the initial release. Another Inticreates project, Mighty No. 9, has opted to not release the game at all until ALL the planned content is ready to go. So which path is Bloodstained set to go?”

“Following a recent conversation in the shoutbox with our community manager Mana (thanks as always for your hard work and attentiveness), it can be confirmed that Bloodstained will follow a staggered content release. Some portion of the game will release first and then additional content (as outlined by the Kickstarter) will follow in the months to come. How much of the game will be there at launch day (Just the main game? More?) is unclear and probably hasn’t been decided yet but at the very least we should be able to avoid an extremely protracted release as with Mighty No. 9. We are still a longs way off from the game being done so of course anything could change.”

I’m sure it’ll be good or at least I hope it is. Shovel Knight was done right and I can understand why some indies stagger its content. Major developers don’t have that excuse as they have the funds. A game should be released when ready, not with some vague nonsense like in Star Fox Zero’s case where they said they might add online post release. They’ve no intention of doing so.

      What’s that like?

Fine by me, it gives me something new to play in it like with Splatoon.
