Disgaea 5 Complete has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide

Nippon Ichi has reported its latest financial results. In the company’s report, it’s confirmed that Disgaea 5 Complete has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

This number was to be expected given what we previously knew about the game’s performance. While it started slowly in Japan, Disgaea 5 Complete had been off to a strong start in the west. NIS America president Takuro Yamashita said a few months ago that pre-orders were at 110,000 copies in the west. 78,000 units had been reserved in the US, along with 36,000 copies in Europe.

That’s pretty good for it being the series’ first time on a Nintendo home console.

    • Vinicius

      Disgaea DS.

      • Jack Red

I said Home Console. The DS is a handheld.

  • To think NIS first game ever was on SNES but didn’t developed another game for Nintendo til 2008 and then only made Disgaea DS and Phantom Brave that was worth talking about from them on DS and Wii from 2008-11. Then they stopped developing games for Nintendo til Disgaea 5 Complete which released 6 years after their last game.

Why the sudden change? PlayStation isn’t generating them the enough as it used to. So they started porting to Steam and flock to the Switch to get more revenues.

because Switch is selling well and soon it will be the only portable system on the market. NIS published a ton of jrpgs for Vita.

      • Hidden Flare

But they put the game around the time of switches start? There was no way to judge success.

        • Reggie

They might have already gotten wind that Sony isn’t continuing the handheld market.

          • Hidden Flare

            Hmm possible.

  • Stuart

Awesome,Im glad people are buying it,its a great game.

    100,000 copies worldwide–>absolutely terrible!

    • nemo37

Not particularly terrible for this series. The PS4 version of the game, which was released a year ago on a system that by that time had around 50 million userbase has done close 350,000 world wide. The Switch sales must have been good enough for them to announce that more Disgaea games are coming to the system.

That’s awesome. Do you have have a source?

        • nemo37

My source is VGChartz. Although they only track physical sales.

          • As a heads up, I wouldn’t use VG Chartz, since their numbers can be regularly inaccurate (and tend to be bloated). Sounds about accurate in this instance though.

The PS4 version sold around 120,00 copies worldwide.

      • MoYeung

Disgaea 5 Complete is a Switch port of the original PS4 game, with all of its relatively pricey DLC included.

        Nintendo Switch
        JP: March 3, 2017
        NA: May 23, 2017
        PAL: May 26, 2017

Of course, it was always a good idea to release the game on another platform, but the “worldwide” sales number is too disappointing.

Don’t be an ignorant sack of ****. These sales are super solid for this series, ESPECIALLY considering the fact that this game was a low-effort port of a pre-existing title with very little new content. Minimal effort for for this level of success, the sales were great. Shut the **** up and educate yourself on what constitutes quality sales before you spout such inane bull **** again. permaleaving

I think you were being sarcastic and people missed that, were you?

  • Princess_Eevee9

And Disgaea 6 already been confirmed for Nintendo Switch, thank you Nippon Ichi! Now I have hope for A Disgaea Series Complete Collection.

    • tHe_MaN_wItH_nO_hAnD

Is that true? I haven’t seen anything about 6 mentioned anywhere…

      • Princess_Eevee9

Either it was around E3 or a little before that, but Nippon Ichi President or something was so pleased with the sales of the Nintendo Switch itself they already pledged the next installment on it.

I did my part, though have to get around to actually sinking some good and proper time into the game, it seemed like a game I’d like.

Retailers did not have the game, so bought it on eShop, fun game.

  • DeltaPeng

So…is this good, if so, how good? It is an older game so the numbers could be expected to not be crazy big.

I’ve seen a lot of comments saying these sales are not good and that is really the exact flawed thinking that a lot of western 3rd party publishers and developers take. Obviously 100,000 in a world of billions of potential customers is a very small amount, but these sales figures do not appear in a vacuum. Disgaea 5 originally released on the PS4 to the tune of around 130k units. I have no idea what the development cost of the game was but to release the same game a year later on a new piece of hardware and generate the same sales of the original is very, very good.

I reiterate, 3rd party developers and publishers need to stop looking at the sales numbers at face value. Selling 100,000 units of a game in a franchise that typically sells around 300-500k is not a failure. Instead, what it shows is the market is there. The customers are buying. About 2% of all Switch owners bought Disgaea 5 Complete while less than 1% (0.4 percent to be precise) of PS4 owners bought Disgaea 5 back in 2015 even though there were 30 million PS4 owners at the time of the game’s release. That tells me that the Switch audience is there and much more viable than the PS4 audience.
