Game Freak on why Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon aren’t on Switch

Posted on October 19, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News, Switch

Two new Pokemon games are coming out next month, but they’ll be on 3DS as opposed to Switch. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon are hitting the dedicated handheld on November 17.

In an interview with GameSpot, Game Freak’s Shigeru Ohmori was asked why the titles aren’t on Switch. He echoed what was mentioned to IGN about how on 3DS, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are intended to be the “culmination of all our efforts to get the absolute most out of the system that we can.”

As Ohmori explained:

“We’ve been working with the 3DS hardware since Pokemon X and Y. Even then we wanted to get the maximum power and maximum potential out of the 3DS, and ever since then we’ve continued to try [to do] that. With X and Y we thought we’d got as much as we could out, but then Sun and Moon came along and we pushed even harder and got as much as we could out of the system at that time. And now, again, with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we’ve tried to make this the pinnacle of our work with the 3DS system and make it a culmination of all our efforts to get the absolute most out of the system that we can.”

GameSpot also asked if Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon could hit Switch in the future. However, Ohmori said that “there are [currently] no plans for that in particular.”

Because putting them on the 3DS is much, much cheaper

    • No because they never done this.
Crystal stayed on GBC despite GBA was out
Emerald stayed on GBA despite DS was out
BW 2 stayed on DS despite 3DS was out

      • Tlink7

Why do you think they did all those things? Because they were the cheapest options lol

        • Nope. Has nothing to do with cost. It more about the players and not forcing them to get a new system just to play enhanced version that has either new story or more features.

          • Tlink7

Nintendo is a company. Everything has to do with costs… Nintendo has no qualms about forcing players to get a new version of an existing game on another platform. Just look at MK8D. MK8 didn’t even get the battle mode as DLC… Nintendo doesn’t run on friendship and happiness, stop pretending otherwise

          • Game Freak choose when to move not Nintendo.

          • The Pokemon Company also has the final say which why the CEO announced it at E3 in that short clip. Nintendo never promote anything Pokemon. That all The Pokemon Company and Game Freak.

          • Tlink7

Nintendo has a massive influence on The Pokémon Company

          • doesn’t matter. The Pokemon Company are the one to break the News.
            Not Nintendo main folks.

            All these are retrocompatible systems.

          • And? Doesn’t change anything. We would Game Freak put US&UM on Switch when they have two different teams one working on US&UM and other working on the Switch game at the same time.
They did the same with Crystal, Emerald and BW2. Nothing new.

Nintendo/Pokemon fans always crying about games not being on the next system.

        Yes I agree

I doubt cost have anything to do with it. Nintendo owns Pokemon. I dont think they wanted to put in effort on porting a 3DS game to Switch. Better to go ground up for the Switch

      • Tlink7

What I meant is porting and upgrading costs more than simply editing a game that already exists on a platform

    • Darkrobot

      This is nonsense

      • Tlink7

        It really isn’t

  • Aline Piroutek

We know the engine of Sun Moon is ready and it was a waste to make another for a Switch version.
Like Majoras Mask 3D. A lot of people wanted it on WiiU. Cheaper costs.

  • Simple.
Game Freak don’t jump to the next system until a Pokemon gen ends.
Pokemon Crystal end of 2nd Gen – 2001 – GBA Releases a year before
Pokemon Emerald end of 3rd Gen – 2005 – DS releases a year before
    Pokemon Black & White 2 – end of 5th Gen – 2012 – 3DS releases a year before
Pokemon Ultra Sun & Moon – end of 7th gen – 2017 – Switch releases that year

    GET IT!!

    • Pinkie-Dawn

Each Pokémon gen has a 3-4 year life cycle. It won’t be until 2019 when Gen 8 comes out.

      • I would like to think that but considering the current placing of the anime. It’s half way done in Alola. Unless they plan to extend it for another pass 2018 which I don’t see happening.
Pokemon Switch gotta be their 2018 Holiday title otherwise I see nothing else taking it’s place unless it’s Smash Bros or Animal Crossing.

  • Adrián Alucard

And where is that power they are talking about? They removed triple battles because the lack of power.
Since in SM the trainers also appear in battles they should remove a pokemon slot in battle…

    • Pinkie-Dawn

The 3DS cartridge size is where the power lies.

  • MagcargoMan

Because it’s a third version of a game already on the 3DS?

Also that explanation is pretty much the same one from this article: http://nintendoeverything.com/ultra-sun-and-pokemon-ultra-moon-are-the-last-pokemon-rpgs-for-3ds/
