Minecraft on Switch will have you logging in with Xbox Live when cross-play update drops

Posted on June 14, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

This information comes from a PressFire interview with Mojang CEO Jonas Märtensson…

We’re tying everything together with Xbox Live. So you log in with Xbox Live …

Even on Switch?

Yes. (Laughs) That’s pretty unique as well! But everyone that’s in on this, all the platform holders, have been pretty pragmatic and understanding of that what we’re trying to do is create a good experience for the players. We needed a good system to connect everyone, and Xbox Live is a good system.

    I should’ve known there’d be a catch.

I don’t have an Xbox. But will my Microsoft/Windows/Outlook account work?

    • Acantus

You should just have to create a Xbox live account, should be no harm in that.

    • andyva

Yes, an xbox account is part of your microsoft account. You might still have to choose a username though, but that will probably be possible through minecraft itself.

    • Gemmol Lewis

i use my microsoft outlook email account to sign in

    • Phish!

If you log into outlook you see the xbox logo, xbox account is basically your microsoft account

    • Triforce of the Gods

I had to create an Xbox Live account to download a free game on Windows 10. You don’t need an Xbox to make one.

  • Sno

Hope we don’t have to pay Xbox online fees too. That would be some bs

    • DeltaPeng

I’m worried about this as well, would Nintendo owners need to pay a fee just to play a couple games online? If that is required for cross play, I hope there’s an option to just play with Nintendo owners (via Nintendo’s network), though I kinda doubt they’d incorporate and test 2 different online methods…

      • Sno

From what I can see it’s free, so no Xbox live subscription needed. Hope that’s the case

        • Petri

You probably mean, that you only have to pay subs fee to one of the companies, unless you game on PC.

          • Sno

Well petri, considering we were discussing if you had to pay an Xbox fee on top of the switch fee I’m sure the person I was replying to understood. Thanks though.

      • Link1309

Guys please…. relax!!!! You just have to log in with the microsoft account so crossplay is possible. That has nothing to do with the Xbox and there payment system. On the PC you also dont have to pay anything and have to log in with your Microsoft Account. So chill guys 🙂 all is fine. Dont worry.

is minecraft played in peer to peer connection on consoles?

  • traenkeopa

at that my friends is why we don’t have cross play with ps4

“We are protecting the kids” – Sony

    • Petri

Meanwhile on the PSN: Kids dropping F bombs every second, only to take a little break to yell out racial slurs.

    • Triforce of the Gods

That awkward moment when you try to use the “think of the children” excuse, but Nintendo had no issues doing it.

  • TDude73

Holy love, peace and Woodstock. That news just came out of nowhere!

  • Reggie

I guess this explains why Sony is exempt….

  • Tyler Kincaid

There is no catch. This is the same thing that they do for mobile. It’s free, you just have to log in.

  • Justmadeanaccount2

Good thing I have Xbox and Switch.

  • Airsh Bornely

That’s quite bizarre. Wonder how much implementation there will be for this. Like will you be able to see what your XBL friends are playing too or is just to use their connection type?

    • John Bossert

If it’s like the iOS and Android versions there is a Xbox overlay allowing invites & status.

Everything points to Switch using the same current method.

  • ben

This makes sense. It means we can have a server and an infinite world on the switch. Amazing.

  • Michael C

Small price to pay, and nowhere does it say you have to have a xbox live account. It is not a catch, MS owns the team who is doing the back-end work…why would you expect any different. Always complaining about something.

  • Locky Mavo

It’s got me thinking, since Sony don’t want to join in with cross-play, will that effect the chances of FF14 coming to Switch and Xbox?
