Rumor: Nintendo to launch SNES Mini later this year

Posted on April 19, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, Rumors

If a new report from Eurogamer is to be believed, Nintendo will be following up on the NES Classic Edition / NES Mini with a new product. This year, the site claims that the SNES Mini will be launching.

Eurogamer’s article doesn’t have much in the way of details. However, the site says the hardware is “a major reason why last year’s NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation”.

If Eurogamer is to be believed, the SNES Mini will be ready by Christmas.

“If Eurogamer is to be believed”
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Why do we still do this song and dance every time

    • AJK

Eurogamer…not as bad as kotaku or polygon lol (still tabloid crap though).

    • Phish!

Well Eurogamer had the whole idea of the Switch leaked before the official announcement so….

      • awng781

People always seem to conveniently forget this fact…

      • AquaBat

What, that it’s a portable console? Everyone was guessing that.

        • burchdude65

Eurogamer claimed that it was a portable system with docking capability and detachable controllers for multiplayer. That second part would have been harder to guess.

        • Phish!

portable console with a tegra X1 and detachable controllers that can be used as motion controls, with drawings of it

    • Tlink7

Because people believe what they want to believe

    • Kenshin0011

Are you implying “of course we should believe them”?

Because that’s what your should be. They were right about EVERYTHING concerning the Switch, all the way back to July 2016.

      • AquaBat

Yeah, after all, I’m watching the announcement trailer for Pokémon Stars right now.
Next I’ll check out the trailer for Mother 3 on Virtual Console.
Then I’ll start playing Super Mario Odyssey, which came out at launch, while I wait for Zelda, which was delayed. I can’t wait to play as Female Link!
Then I’ll watch the announcement trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2!

(Yes, those Rogers rumors were backed up by Eurogamer.)

Oh, and let’s not forget when they backed up the claim that the Wii U was ending production on the first week of November, only for Nintendo to utterly crush that rumor, then announce an end to production the very NEXT week to add insult to injury. That was hilarious.

    • Vigilante_blade

They were right about the Switch in many instances though.

      • Tlink7

Crazy laughs make everything better, just ask Ganonderf

  • Fernando Silva

Makes sense, since they discontinued the NES Mini. Another product for X-Mas =D

  • metalpants

Now THIS I can sink my teeth into. NES (IMO) is nowhere NEAR as glorious as the SNES. That said, not sure if it’s truly worth the investment for me when the Switch gets VC…

    • Exy

I’m certainly not going to miss NES Classic. But they better not mess this up.

  • Keithin8a

Only if it can play SNES games from a cart.

  • James Fox

The only selling point it needs to have is the 1st official re-release of Tetris Attack in decades
However, they must relocalize it back to Panel de Pon for legal reasons

  • Mark

    ….. yeah, I don’t believe this one.

  • Linkavitch Chomofsky

I want it, but after the NES classic, I’m doubtful that I’ll actually be able to get one.

  • Bart

Hmm I wonder what games will be on it if this is true…

  • Ektoras Kalderis

Seriously? You had to put the US abomination version in the pic

    • …I like the U.S. SNES….if only it was more colorful

  • bdp

and release like 8 of them and then discontinue it 2 weeks later?

    • awng781

Make that 5 and 1 week later.

  • Carlos

Hopefully it’s easier to get if it’s true. For some reason I’m doubtful though.

  • Mamityh

It’s going to be a pricey virtual console machine that lets you download titles, therefore eliminating the need for switch VC

  • Tlink7

I don’t want any of this ”console mini” crap, just give me all these games on the Switch and then some 😛

    • Carlos

Not if I have to rebuy each game I bought over again. I’ve paid too much in VC games already.

  • Kenshin0011

So lame, and knowing Nintendo, doing this takes away focus and resources from Switch.

  • Xzacutor

So if it’s real I’ve got to get a US and a PAL one.

  • Gamingfan

What will this cost in australia nintendo? $400? May as well if the switch is $470.

    • nemo37

YIKES! I just checked prices for things in Australia, why are most things so expensive? I mean I would assume that things would be more expensive than US because your dollar is weaker. However, you dollar is a bit stronger than the Canadian Dollar, and yet most things are cheaper here (the PS4 Slim is the only thing I found in the EB Games AU site that was priced like the Canadian version); it should be the other way around or the prices should be the same.

      • as far as i know, AUD used to be a weaker currency, no one ever made up for its increase in value, and international companies exploit them because they’re kind of a remote country

  • O.H. X-1990

NO! I know that this is totally fake, because since I failed to get the NES Classic Edition, in which it was discontinued, there’s no way am I getting that SNES Classic Edition either, because that is fake, 100% fake! So, to hell with those classic editions, Nintendo Switch FTW!

  • GoldenTriforce

I really didn’t like the NES classic edition, so on one hand I would be pretty upset if Nintendo is makes another, but on the other hand I love the Super Nintendo but some games are hard to find, so if they’re on this, that may be appealing.

  • SNES Mini would easily outsell the NES Mini. Day one for me if this is true and these are some of the no-brainer games that should be included…..

    Super Mario World
Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
    Super Mario RPG
    Super Metroid
    Final Fantasy VI
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
    Super Castlevania
    Donkey Kong Country
    Chrono Trigger
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time
    Earthbound
    Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts
    Secret Of Mana
    Tales Of Phantasia
    Super Mario Kart
    SimCity
    Yoshi’s Island

Every last one of these games are classics and no one couldn’t tell me that if any of these games are on the ” rumored ” SNES Mini that they wouldn’t want to get that device

  • Vigilante_blade

Dear god, no. I don’t want to go through this again. Please, if this happens, release millions.

  • anthony

I’d rather get a regular SNES.

  • FinalArcadia

Didn’t care about the NES Mini, but I’d be all over a SNES Mini since the SNES was my entry-point into video games. There are so many good choices for games for a SNES Mini too…

If this is real, I really hope its easier to get ahold of than the NES one, because I will want it BADLY.

  • hi v3.0

I think this is kinda dumb because of Mario Odyssey for the Switch, but if they continue to meet demand through the entire 2018 then that’s good

  • Apfel

I come from the future. Let me tell you snes mini is great! Cute, great games (FF, Chrono Trigger, Super Castlevania and more!). Even the controller’s cord is longer! However they made the european/japanese mini snes only, not the US model.

    Spoiler Alert!
Nintendo shipped a lot of units, but people, afraid of not being able to purchase one, bought 5 pieces each. Nintendo tried to make one for everyone…But it’s still hard to find.
Oh, by the way, nintendo made a last batch of nes mini. It’s available everywhere!!!
According to IGN, nintendo will be launching mini N64, probably for xmas time 2018. But that’s still a rumor….
Last but not least, no signs of Metroid for Switch yet, but nintendo ported Federation Force for Switch VR, WW3 still not happening, and GameStop closed 10000 more stores in the US.

  • Mitchel

I’ll pre-order it as long as all these games are available:

    Chrono Trigger
    Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!
    EarthBound
    Final Fantasy II
    Final Fantasy III
    Illusion of Gaia
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    Secret of Evermore
    Secret of Mana
    Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars [NA]
    Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
    Super Metroid
    Terranigma

Would be awesome if they included a demo of the canceled game Dream: Land of Giants!

  • Worthless without Saturday Night Slam Masters

  • FutureFox

I doubt this. Why would need want to undercut the Switch’s hot streak?

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

So if they didn’t have hardware for NES why do people believe they will for SNES lol
