Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment announced for Switch

Posted on January 11, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment are coming to Switch, Yacht Club Games has announced.

Going forward, Shovel Knight will be known as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. When Yacht Club Games makes the change, you’ll be able to purchase each campaign as standalone games on Switch (and other platforms not counting Wii U and 3DS).

The breakdown from Yacht Club is as follows:

Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope – Shovel of Hope is our new name for the original Shovel Knight game, since it needed a title like the others. What do you think!? Rewatch the adventure here.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows – Plague Knight’s Campaign emerges from the Shadows to hopefully get some recognition this time! Watch it all here.

Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment – Specter of Torment is our most expansive campaign yet. We’re so excited for you to become the reaper! See Specter Knight in action here.

Later in 2017 the following will release (names TBD):

Shovel Knight: King Knight’s Campaign – A crazy campaign with the gilded goob himself!

Shovel Knight: Battle Mode – Duel with up to 4 players as your favorite heroic or villainous knight! (3DS/Vita not included)

Why is this happening? Well, we hope providing less expensive standalone versions will provide better entry points for different types of players! Also, players can more easily grab an adventure (or Battle Mode) on another platform!

Yacht Club Games will be raising the price of Shovel Knight sometime during the spring. Aside from that, Body Swap Mode is finished, and will be included for Shovel Knight’s campaign. Local two-player co-op is also heading to new platforms, but not 3DS.

    Great news.

Heck yeah man, I’m ready to jump right back into this one! FOR SHOVELRY!

  • Ryan Hainley

This is awesome news! I still have yet to play Shovel Knight, so this’ll be perfect to have on Switch. The new way the campaigns are being handled is also really smart moving forward for them. The hype leading up to Switch is getting so real.

Wait… Shield Knight is a boy?!

    • Addy

Nope, woman. Don’t know why the artist gave her a masculine looking face.

    • Addy

No wait, there was a gender swapped mode in the works, so that could be why.

      • Ryan Hainley

They explain it in the the blog post on Yacht Club’s website, but yes, that is their preview of the body swap mode.

      • ≈ KobobKC ≈ ^.^

Oh, so that’s a female Shovel Knight as well.

    • Maxo

They swapped their genders because its coming to the switch…

  • KnightWonder

HD Shovel Knight on the go!

  • Alex Pop Tula

Now let’s tie them in with a 3 pack amigo with Plague Knight, Specter Knight & King Knight

  • Addy

Oh look, Shovel Knight for the Switch. How did I not see this coming? At least, release the game will all of the scenarios intact and not leave us waiting for any of the upcoming ones, okay Yacht Club?

    • Ryan Hainley

Eh, it’s free DLC for all the people who bought it from the get-go. No use complaining about how long it takes.

      • Addy

You still have to pay for the additional scenarios for the Switch version.

        • Ryan Hainley

In the Switch Version, and for anyone that buys the game after Spring, yes. But still, that’s nothing to complain about. It’s free for people that already bought it, and for those that haven’t yet, nobody is forcing you to buy Treasure Trove with everything unless you want to. There are several entry points for players now, and they’re making it so you don’t have to purchase it like an episodic game and wait long periods of time for the rest. It’s very smart on their end, and very convenient and helpful on our end.

          • Addy

But what if the Wii U and 3DS may not get the additional scenarios? The Wii U version is unlikely to get anymore content due to the system already been dead.

          • Alex Pop Tula

the WiiU & 3DS versions will get all the DLC for free they confirmed that on the article, jesus.

          • Ryan Hainley

For further confirmation that they aren’t abandoning the previous versions.

          • Addy

            Yeah, in 20theWiiUisdeadwhydidntyougetaSwitchyet.

          • Ryan Hainley

            >Complains about the possibility of not getting it
            >Ungrateful to even be getting it at all on Wii U and 3DS
            Lol, whatever dude.

          • Addy

3DS version can get the content, it’s Wii U version that seemed unlikely due to the fact it’s dead. If you do come across a physical disc of the game when the Wii U’s servers come to an end, you won’t be able to get the new content. There are other ports you can play Shovel Knight on, XBONE, PS4, PC, 3DS, and the recently announced Switch version. The upcoming scenarios do not have a release date announced, Specter of Torment may get released as late as Fall 2017, King Knight’s scenario may be released as late as 2019. Waiting for free content for a game on a system that considered the worst selling console for Nintendo is pointless. Ungrateful? Far from it.

          • Ryan Hainley

Specter of Torment is coming in Spring, as I already stated, but you were too busy whining like a baby to ignore, and King’s Knight + Battle Mode are also confirmed for later in 2017, as stated by Yacht Club. The Wii U servers aren’t going to die for a long while, even if the console itself is dead. Is it pointless waiting? That’s up to the person who bought the game on Wii U. But as for you, get over yourself, Yacht Club and Nintendo aren’t going to cater to a single person’s whiny needs. You’re incredible ungrateful for acting like they need to.

          • Addy

I could continue with this, but Disqus decided to derp on me, I’m done, you win, let’s move on with our lives.

          • ジョシュ

Will Specter of Torment be a free add on?

          • Ryan Hainley

If you already own the game, yes. Otherwise, after Spring, the game can be purchased in campaign packs, or a bundle containing all of the content.

  • Stuart

I don’t get it. Is this like two separate games or a game and a DLC?

    • Alex Pop Tula

For the Switch and after Spring (other platforms) will be sold separately, as stand alone games. If you already own the game or buy it before spring, you will get the new campaigns as free updates.

    • hi v3.0

It’s an expansion DLC, the first one is free and the rest are released sometime this year but idk if they’re free or not

  • ジョシュ

Was shovel knight a female character?

  • ジョシュ

I haven’t played shovel knight yet! Should I buy it now then? or should I wait for the switch version?

    • MagcargoMan

Up to you man. Depends on what console you plan on using in the foreseeable future.

    • Annie

It’s cheaper if you buy it now

    • Aqua

If I’m understanding this article correctly, you’ll get all of the DLC for free if you buy it now. After spring and for the Switch version, they’re increasing the price and giving the DLC prices. I’d definitely buy it now.

  • MaybeHitler

Great, now no reason to have to buy the Switch or Wii U versions. Based Yacht Club looking out for the people who actually supported them and giving them all the features.

  • MagcargoMan

Don’t really see why they needed to rename the original but whatever.

Wait… is the Shovel of Hope version unable to have the DLC?

    • Supporter

I think the Shovel of Hope version just the original game. You can buy the other campaigns separately, so I think any new campaigns won’t be included with the main game.

      • MagcargoMan

So why would anyone buy Shovel of Hope instead of just getting the original Shovel Knight? Is it cheaper?

        • Supporter

Shovel of Hope will be a bit more expensive. The idea is to allow people to buy the campaigns separately.

Once Shovel of Hope launches, the original Shovel Knight won’t be available because it’s the same thing, just without the other campaigns.

So if someone doesn’t have Shovel Knight now, and wants the other campaigns, now is the time to buy it before Shovel Knight changes to Shovel of Hope.

          • MagcargoMan

So it’s more expensive even though it’s original game but without the ability to have add-on content? Why would they replace the original with this? Seems a bit scummy to me.

          • lordlaharl

No, Shovel of Hope will be cheaper, while buying Treasure Trove, which has the original campaign and all the DLC, but will be more expensive.

          • MagcargoMan

I’m not talking about Treasure Trove. I’m talking about the original version of Shovel Knight.

          • Supporter

I’m not sure if I have this all correct, but I believe you pay a higher price so when you start Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, you can choose any of the campaigns right from the start instead of playing the original first, and then playing the other campaigns after.

          • MagcargoMan

But I’m talking about Shovel of Hope by itself, not about getting it through Treasure Trove.

          • Supporter

I’m not sure but maybe this can help:

  • Vigilante_blade

Ya know…. I’ll rebuy it on Switch (if the Switch is decent). It’s a good game.

    Is this game any good?
