Splatoon getting free Ika Musume (Squid Girl) collaboration costume

A new costume based on the Ika Musume (Squid Girl) manga is coming to Splatoon. In August, a free update with the DLC will be released.

This announcement only pertains to Japan at present. We’ll let you know if we hear anything for the west.

The first collaboration between Splatoon and Ika Musume came in the form of various images. We shared one of those at the top of this post, though you can find the other two here.

      I find it hard to believe they are going to limit it to the Japanese when everyone is playing on the same servers globally.

      I have to wonder what this will look like to foreign players who don’t have the data for it in their copies. Maybe it will look the same but have a generic name like the 7-Eleven stuff in New Leaf.

        That’s because they don’t. The show isn’t well-known enough to warrant the licensing costs to get it anywhere outside Japan.

          If you visit any anime site or forum, you’re going to see Squid Girl eventually. We just have to hope Nintendo cares enough, and it’s not like they can hide it since the servers are worldwide.

          Except it has to be licensed anyway, or else the game would crash when you’re paired up with someone with the costume.

            For the record, from what I recall Smash 4 defaults to a basic skin when playing against Mii Fighters with DLC costumes you don’t have. They can do the same thing here.

            Kinda ruins the point of wearing it, though, don’t you think?

            Well, if they make it a region-exclusive failsafe rather than just a DLC failsafe, the Japanese players will still be able to see other Japanese players wearing it even without the DLC.

    Remember that Splatoon shares servers between US and Japan. They have to bring it overseas.

      They don’t have to bring it overseas. They just have to put the data for it in the update so that other regions won’t crash upon having to show the costume.

    There is only a 0.000001% chance of this coming out of Japan, unfortunately, especially considering the show is already licensed by a company that is NOT Nintendo or even has a relation with them outside Japan. The licensing would be expensive.

    since everything is on the disc, there is no reason what so ever to not unlock it for the west.

    This will be what the advertising notice at the beggining of the game would mean then. I always thought it was due to the miiverse integration.

      The notice is because of the Amiibo box in the plaza.

    This better not be Japan-exclusive. Many Westerners know about Squid Girl/Ika Musume and if they don’t, the costume can get people to know about the Squid Girl franchise.

    If it is Japan-exclusive… then I DEMAND WORLD WAR 3.
