Upcoming Mario Kart 8 update – edit others’ highlights, map on screen, improved online stability, and more

Posted on August 5, 2014 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U

Nintendo is releasing a fairly major update for Mario Kart 8 on August 27. It will not only bring along the free Mercedes-Benz DLC, but also several additions/improvements.

Here’s the full rundown:

– Map display will be added on the TV screen
– Mercedes-Benz DLC will be available for free
– Default menu selection following GP race is changing to next race (instead of view highlight)
– Last used kart customization added to save
– Edit others’ highlights
– Records screen with total coins, online win-loss record, character selection rates, etc.
– Improved online stability
– Other problems will be addressed

While the update has only been officially announced for Japan, North America and Europe will almost certainly received the patch on the same day.

wait is this for NA or japan only

      • Ivan Luna

It state it’s Japan but everyone is hoping this should also be worldwide.

  • Ivan Luna

I hope for an edit lap tracks o removal short laps in N64 Rainbow Road.

  • “- Default menu selection following GP race is changing to next race (instead of view highlight)” This is the best thing ever. They listened NINTENDO LISTENED

  • IMPROVEMENTS! great.

  • djcaetano

This update could allow highlight configuration to be saved. The default configuration (30s) is almost worthless.

  • LordDisco

There are actually 3 Mercedes cars, and they are all supposed to be free. Nice!

  • Vorlik Blade

This update is surprisingly awesome : D , map on screen, default selection switched to Next Race and saved kart customizations are all changes I wanted but didn’t think were going to happen.

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Well this is the new Nintendo..where they actually make it happen.

      • SolarShane13

Make it happen? Since when? This is the first time they have actually listened to their fan base.

        • Not so. Wii Fit U got a patch two months ago that made the Routines progress faster, which a lot of people were asking for. NSMBU got pro controller support. Earthbound was released in the US VC. Miis were added to Smash Bros as an answer to character requests.

I admit the lion’s share of common complaints haven’t been answered, but this isn’t the first time they’ve listened to fans. It might be the fastest.

        • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

That’s why I said this is the NEW Nintendo genius

  • Vigilante_blade

I might go back to playing this then. It’s a good update.

  • nWo4liFe

It would be nice if there was a DLC update to fix what actually matters.. BATTLE MODE.

    • Mr Ninty

go on miiverse and demand it.

      • nWo4liFe

        ALLLL the time.

  • Operative

Small but extremely needed improvements. Especially the menu thing. I hated clicking on highlights by accident. And looking down at the map always messed me up since it took too long

“Map display will be added on the TV screen”

  • This few in particular I can’t believe didn’t make it into the game in the first place:
    – Map display will be added on the TV screen
    – Default menu selection following GP race is changing to next race (instead of view highlight)
    – Last used kart customization added to save

  • AsianDude2o9

that patch come out on my birthday

  • Marc Garcia Jovells

Awesome, but I hope the mercedes are really optional…

  • So all we need afterwards is Times brought back, If I win by 2 milliseconds, I want to see that lol. And improve the voice chat so it’s not only during the lobby, but we can chat DURING THE RACE.

  • Serialmania

Nintendo is getting better each day and it made me happy….

  • BladeX

no fire hopping fix = FAIL nintendo

    • Falcoxcalibur

Fire hopping IS NOT an issue at all. It is a technique.

      • Tito

Very helpful and very fun too. Like fire hopping can help evading bananas and shells, while in boost. Also there shall be a time, when it’s all useless items pouring in and skill is only hope you have.

      • Shawn Bronald

It’s actually an exploit that people like to refer to as a technique. If it was a technique, Nintendo would have intentionally put it in the game. Since they did not, it’s an exploit.

        • SolarShane13

They didn’t intentionally put it in the game? How exactly do you know this? Also, if this fire hopping is an exploit, then I bet wheelies were an exploit too as they overpowered the Karts.

          • Scott

Nintendo intentionally put wheelies into Mario Kart Wii. Thus, not an exploit.

          • Shikou

I dare you to fire hopping with tilt control… then you will know it is an exploit.

          • SolarShane13

Just because something is harder with motion control, doesn’t mean it’s an exploit!

          • Shikou

harder? just try it. harder far too short to describe it.
Is basically impossible to do well with tilt control, that is a proof it isn’t an intentional technique, so exploit.

      • Shikou

Is an issue… because its almost impossible to do with tilt controls! and yes, there are ppl who actually use tilt control =p

  • bradley

NOW THIS!!! is a step in the right direction

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

couldn’t agree more. They should add an online co-op mode where people around the world can do Grand Prix together, but then again we already have the Tournaments option so I doubt Nintendo will consider it.

  • James Rhodes

I can confirm this will be released in Europe, the French Wii U Facebook page just updated with this news

  • JoFaNa

    Nintendo remove fire hopping

    • SolarShane13

Remove it because you can’t personally do it? LOL.

      • Scott

Remove it because it’s an exploit that takes the fun out of playing online.

Firehopping is literally the easiest thing to do but if you need to exploit a glitch just to be an adequate racer in a cartoon kart game then maybe you shouldn’t play cartoon kart games.

        • SolarShane13

I fail to see how fire hopping is an exploit. Grumble Volcano is an exploit. Wario’s Gold Mine is an exploit. But hopping after a boost? Um, what? How is hopping after a boost an exploit?

Again, I ask this: How do you know 100% for sure, absolutely, positive, that Nintendo didn’t intentionally include fire hopping? Did it ever occur to you that I don’t know, perhaps Nintendo actually made karts superior this time around?

Also, telling me to quit playing a game over an technique? Grow up!

          • Tito

There’s always causal players and ‘noobs’ around. I remember I lost to fire hopper before the finish line, but instead of whining, we accepted and learned.

          • SolarShane13

I accept when I loose too. I have even lost to other hoppers because I screwed up my hopping. Loosing also encourages you to practice more.

          • Shikou

There is a nintendo direct where they said balance is very important to them and trying hard to balance bike vs kart. Also, fire hopping give a great advantage to stick controls over tilt controls.

          • SolarShane13

And you actually believe the company that screwed up the item balance? The company that said they learned from the 3DS and wouldn’t repeat that? LOL.

          • Shikou

So, you accept fire hopping is another balance-screw from nintendo?
            Obviously, fire hopping wasn’t intentional.

          • SolarShane13

Taking my words out of context. Where did I say that I’d accepted? All I asked was that you actually believe some company with a bad track record?

          • Shikou

Was a question, not an affirmation.
The fact is, nintendo said they will balance bike and karts. Believe if they will manage it or not is another topic, but they won’t intentionally screw the balance adding the fire hopping.

You are in denial, fire hopping isn’t intentional.

          • Tito

They did learned, all right, but worsen, MUCH worse. I believe it’s unfair, if that 2nd get endless reds, stars, goldens or bullets. While 1st get hit and then fall behind and get one banana at 12th.

Sadly, I hardly (Or none at all) see any causal player complain about that. It’s sad, I believe Nintendo will listen major.

          • Shikou

2nd won’t get a star/golden/bullet and even reds is not that common for 2nd, unless you play in frantic mode. My only issue with item balance is… the coin. Getting 4 consecutive coins when you already have 10 is bs.

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

The Map on TV Screen should’ve been day one. My dad was having lotta trouble racing since he didn’t know where he was going; that ended badly.

  • BravoGangUS

They need to update it so when you play with someone locally, the gamepad and TV both have their own screen.

    • Shawn Bronald

And/or change the layout of the screen. Every Mario Kart game to date has been a top/bottom layout for 2-player races. Now they change it to side-by-side? Terrible! At least make it an option.

  • Scotty Boy

hey need to add race times to every race!! like double dash had

  • JezzupWuzzup

They forgot to patch bike speeds. They missed out on making bikes a viable choice for online play and time trials. This is Mario Kart history just for the fact they didn’t need to patch a glitch that allowed the player to complete the race in 30 seconds.

  • Tarkan Huseyin

now a patch for fire hopping is needed
