10 Pokemon who need Mega Evolutions

Posted on December 14, 2025 by in Features, Switch, Switch 2

Mega Evolutions are a hot topic at the moment thanks to Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and we’ve picked out 10 creatures that we feel deserve that form.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC is available now, and it introduced a whole bunch of new Mega Evolutions along with it. If we had to guess, that means we probably won’t be seeing any all-new Mega Evolutions for a very long time, which clearly means it’s as good a time as any to name a few Pokemon who could still one for themselves.

Pokemon like Mawile, Malamar, Delphox, and Diancie all really needed it – they weren’t very strong in their base forms. So for the sake of this list, we’re only picking weaker Pokemon. That means you won’t see any pseudo-legendary Pokemon like Kommo-o or Dragapult on this list – they’re already plenty strong. Do note that this list excludes all of the Pokemon who received new Mega Evolutions in Mega Dimension, so if you’re trying to remain unspoiled on who they are, a few noteworthy exclusions on this list may give you a small clue. Keep that in mind before you start reading!

Cacturne

Cacturne

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire introduced many new Pokemon – but a lot of them were very weak, even for the time, and they’re even more outclassed nowadays. Cacturne has access to decent attacking moves and some solid status moves like Spikes and Spiky Shield, but its stats leave much to be desired. It’s got decent base 115 Attack and Special Attack stats, but it’s pitifully slow at base 55 Speed. A Mega Evolution would go a long way here – giving it Sand Rush as its ability would be interesting to double its Speed during a sandstorm. Or you could give it a new ability that sets up sand and doubles its Speed in a sandstorm. Or maybe that’s too strong, actually.

Cursola

Cursola

Cursola is an incredibly cool Pokemon, and one of my personal favorites. However, it’s very often forgotten and isn’t very strong in battles, either. Its biggest flaws are that it’s horribly slow and its physical defense is nonexistent. That means you can smack it with pretty much any physical attack before it even gets to move, and it goes down. That said, Cursola has some really interesting options, including Strength Sap, Hex, Power Gem, Giga Drain, and Iron Defense. Perhaps a Mega Evolution could make Cursola the first-ever Ghost/Rock-type Pokemon and come with a big Defense boost. Maybe you could even give it the Solid Rock or Filter ability to help it stay alive for longer. Cursola has sky-high Special Attack as it is, so a defense boost would go a long way. Or maybe you could go crazy and take 100 from its Special Defense and put it into Speed to turn it into a true glass cannon somehow.

Electivire

Electivire

Electivire is a fan-favorite evolution introduced in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The problem is, it isn’t super strong – it’s got good Attack, and a decent base 95 Speed, but it’s going to get outrun by most powerful Pokemon and taken down in a single attack (or two). A Mega Evolution could keep Electivire’s typing the same, or it could make it Electric/Fighting or Electric/Dark instead. You could even give it the Transistor ability to further increase the power of its Electric-type moves. This would create a cool dynamic where Electivire has to rely on Wild Charge (a move with recoil), but can dish out insane amounts of damage while it’s active.

Lanturn

Lanturn

Lanturn is one of the more forgotten Johto Pokemon, but it has a neat Water/Electric typing. A Mega Evolution could very well keep the same types, but depending on the direction it goes, it could become Water/Dark, Electric/Dark, or possibly Water/Fairy with Galvanize as its ability to keep the Electric theme. Whichever the case may be, Lanturn’s base stats are thoroughly unimpressive – its HP is quite good at base 125, but everything else is completely unremarkable. You could take this Pokemon in many different directions – turn it into a slow, offensive powerhouse or perhaps a defensive Pokemon that focuses on status moves. That makes it a great candidate for a Mega Evolution.

Lokix

Lokix

Lokix is probably the strongest Pokemon on this list. With a solid Attack stat and the Tinted Lens ability, Lokix can fire off incredibly powerful First Impression attacks even if the opponent resists Bug-type moves. A Mega Evolution has the chance to look incredibly cool here – but it could also ramp up Lokix’s already-high strength while giving it a much-needed Speed increase, too. Or it could simply increase its defensive stats. If you really want to make Mega Lokix crazy, you could give it Adaptability as its ability to even further increase the power of its Bug and Dark-type moves.

Minior

Minior

It’s got a cool design and all, but Minior is one of the worst final stage Pokemon there is. It needs to get down to half health to access its core form, which has base 100 Attack and Special Attack – nothing impressive at all. Minior will often die before it even transforms into its core form, and a Mega Evolution could bypass all that shenanigans and bump up its power and Speed. Mega Minior still probably wouldn’t be very good, to be honest, but it’d be something at least.

Stonjourner

Stonjourner

On the surface, Stonjourner isn’t too bad. Base 70 Speed is higher than you would expect for a physically defensive Rock-type, and it’s got a good base 125 Attack as well. However, its base 20 Special Defense is literally the lowest in the entire game alongside Caterpie, Weedle, Magikarp, and Igglybuff. That means that any special move is going to take it down in one hit. There’s a lot of potential for a Mega Stonjourner – perhaps an enhanced Power Spot ability that increases its own power, or maybe an ability that reflects a special move back at the attacker once before deactivating for the rest of the battle.

Sunflora

Sunflora

Sunflora suffers from a few bad traits: it’s slow, its defenses are low, and it has a lot of weaknesses. That means it’s generally going to be knocked out before it even has the chance to move. To be honest, Sunflora needs a lot of help, and a Mega Sunflora still probably wouldn’t be very strong. But you could change its typing to Grass/Fire, give it a big boost to its Special Attack, and maybe even give it Drought as its ability. Sunflora’s actual moveset is decent, with options like Leech Seed, Trailblaze to boost Speed, Dazzling Gleam, Solar Beam, and Weather Ball, which would become a Fire-type attack in the sun. There’s definitely potential here!

Trevenant

Trevenant

Trevenant has a cool design, but it isn’t an incredibly strong Pokemon. It has a solid base 110 Attack stat, and that’s really about it. But its Ghost/Grass-typing is very unique, and you could easily turn its Mega Evolution into a bigger tree with giant roots. It gets access to good moves like Wood Hammer, Will-O-Wisp, Leech Seed, Poison Jab, and Earthquake. Maybe you could give it Swords Dance and extra defenses? An ability that doubles the power of two-turn attacks could be a neat idea, too – that would Phantom Force incredibly powerful, and possibly even worth using. Most of the time, competitive Pokemon don’t use two-turn attacks because you can just switch out before it lands.

Wugtrio

Wugtrio

Speaking in terms of competitive play only (and even casual play), Wugtrio is one of the worst fully-evolved Pokemon ever. It’s got an unimpressive base 100 Attack, but a good base 120 Speed. That being said, it cannot stomach a single hit thanks to its pitiful base 35 HP and low base 50 and 70 defenses. To add insult to injury, Wugtrio’s abilities, Gooey and Rattled, only activate if it takes damage. A Mega Evolution doesn’t have to make Wugtrio super-defensive or anything – in fact, it can’t possibly do that because Mega Evolved Pokemon never gain an increased HP stat. But it could make Wugtrio’s short, short time on the field more impactful with a better ability and increased offensive stats.

Which Pokemon do you think deserve a Mega Evolution the most? For this one, we tried to avoid “common” answers like suggesting an Electric/Dark-type Mega Luxray. There are some deep cuts here, but there are plenty of other Pokemon who could use buffs as well. Unfortunately, it does appear that receiving a Mega Evolution disqualifies a Pokemon from ever getting a normal evolution, but hopefully that will change sometime. For Pokemon like Delibird, Tropius, and Luvdisc, a regular evolution would help them out more than a Mega Evolution ever could.
