Disney Infinity will have yearly releases
Disney Interactive will be releasing Disney Infinity games on a regular basis – each year, in fact. Activision has gotten into the same habit with its Skylanders franchise.
While speaking with VideoGamer, producer John Vignocchi discussed how yearly releases will be handled:
“With Infinity we’re looking at releasing versions that come out each year and those will feature all of the content [for] the year. One of the reasons why we did the figures was that future versions of Infinity will still respect all of those characters. So when we release a future version of Infinity, although we won’t have a Play Set that necessarily goes with the characters, the characters will still be able to play inside of the Toy Box, and we’ll add new features to future versions of Infinity as well.”
Fortunately, any character made for a Disney Infinity sequel will work with all previous games, according to Vignocchi.
“We’ll not only be forwards-compatible but backwards-compatible as well, because we’ll push a title update that features all the characters from Infinity 2 that can be applied to your Infinity 1 game. So then players from Infinity 2 can still interact with players from Infinity 1 inside of their Toy Box with that title update. So even if you own Infinity 1, you could buy an Infinity 2 character, [and] we would push all the animation data down the pipe into the Toy Box on Infinity 1.”
Last but not least, Vignocchi mentioned how Play Sets will tie into new Disney movie launches:
“There will be a day and date release with the Play Set. We’re planning for it. We’re planning from the outset. We’re given an unprecedented level of access to the film-makers. I’ve worked at Disney for many years now. I worked on LEGO Pirates and Disney Universe, and I’ve worked on Tron and Pirates of the Caribbean; the level of access and collaboration that we have with the film-makers on Infinity is totally different than anything that I’ve ever worked on before. We’re actually directly working with them, so what they’re doing is giving us access to their films as they’re in development, so we’re getting such early access that that is what is allowing us to create these Play Sets where we’re expanding on their content and collaboratively working with these film-makers to create a true transmedia experience.”
