Nintendo falls outside of top ten in Metacritic’s 2021 game publisher rankings
Metacritic published its game publisher rankings for 2021, and it includes some interesting news about Nintendo.
Xbox Game Studios, Sony, and Humble Games make up the top three. We also see other familiar names like Capcom and SEGA in the top ten. Nintendo, however, is a few places beyond that sitting at #14.
Nintendo has actually fallen continuously over the past few years. Although the company ranked second in 2017, the Big N dropped to fourth in 2018 and 2019, then ninth in 2020.
Here’s a look at the full Metacritic’s game publisher rankings for 2021:
Metacritic points out how rare it is for Nintendo finish outside of the top ten. The site actually highlights how the company’s “average Metascore actually ticked up a few tenths of a point compared to last year’s rankings, but its percentage of games receiving positive reviews fell from 67% to 50%.” Additionally, Nintendo had a lack of titles that scored 90 or higher. Even with games that reviewed well, none of its releases reached that mark. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury hit 89 while Metroid Dread sits at 88.
