Keegan-Michael Key improvised a song as Toad for The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Keegan-Michael Key has spoken briefly about his role as Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and interestingly enough, it looks like he has a musical number in the film.
Key said in an interview with Variety that Toad will show off his singing chops. He further added that he even improvised a song.
Key mentioned: “I got to improvise a song in ‘Super Mario Bros.,’ which was an absolute blast. That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing.”
As for Toad’s voice in general, Key said:
“I was working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the internal journey of the character. And then with the directors [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we sprinkled some things in, we moved it around.
There was something about the timbre. I wanted it higher and higher and higher. And that’s where we ended up, and I’m really happy with where we ended up.”
Toad won’t be the only character with some musical action in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Jack Black, the voice of Bowser, recently said he brought some of his heavy metal roots to the film. He also talked about how “Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rockstar, a big, strong and scary rockstar. And I did a little bit of rocking. I think you’ll be surprised to see that Bowser has a musical side. After the movie comes out, I might take it to Broadway.”
Fans got their first look at Mario, Bowser, Toad, and Luigi in the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie released last week. You can get caught up on it here. The film will debut on April 7, 2023.
