[Let’s Talk] What are you playing? – February 2026

Posted on January 31, 2026 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

A new month is now here. Now that we’re in February, we want to know what you’ve been playing.

Are you giving the new Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade a shot? How about Dynasty Warriors: Origins or Grid: Legends? Maybe the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons update? No matter the case, let us know in the comments below.

Highlight from last week’s topic: Your current thoughts on Mario Kart World

Mario Kart 8 was a tough act to follow, especially after 8 Deluxe and the Booster Course Pass. That was eleven years of constant post-launch development across two gaming generations. I’m not surprised that Mario Kart World isn’t flying out of the gate with reams upon reams of content because I remember the base Mario Kart 8 game for the Wii U.

Which is funny. MK8 back then was said to be the death of the series due to being “overly casualized”. They severely nerfed bikes, heavily curtailed snaking, had overly wide tracks to accommodate the jump from 8 to 12 players, didn’t punish people enough for falling off of the track, had a character selection too front-loaded with babies, Koopalings, and whatever on Earth Pink Gold Peach was…

So seeing Mario Kart 8 treated as the series’ gold standard now, to which the newer entry cannot possibly compare, is a little amusing. People are ALWAYS going to complain about the new thing being not as good as the old thing.

I haven’t played a lot, but I’m enjoying. I’m finding it much harder than Mario Kart 8, it has a lot of subtle differences, I’m glad that it’s so different from 8, but after playinh that pne from so long, it’s been challenginv to adapt.

After spending 15 hours with it (with Mirror Mode unlocked), I simply moved on.

I still had some fun with Mario Kart World myself and the Knockout Tour mode is the best part for me, but this whole game was a bit too hard of a pill for me to get down after the likes of Mario Kart 8 (and I’m not just talking about the content, especially with its Switch port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) and it wasn’t really the “killer app” I was looking forward to compared to the Switch (and Wii U)’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or the Wii U’s Nintendo Land, even.

Good and fun game but in my opinion it suffers from a few drawbacks:

– Open world is big and fun but gets boring after a while chasing little challenges here and there without that much else to do.
– Personally don’t mind the long tracks but I can see why people get bored of them. Especially online.
– Some items are a bit overtuned while others don’t do enough, not to mention the few that feels like they could’ve skipped (ice flower with the same effect as fire flower?)
– Missing characters from old MK games (and guests like Inkling, Link, Villager…) and some missing costumes.
– Not enough online options to choose our preferred playstyle. Like only 3 laps courses.

All in all, good game but not at its current price. Maybe get it on sale or in a bundle. In my opinion not as good as base MK8DX, but still fun to play with friends and family. Really hoping it gets some characters/tracks DLC soon for it to get better, along with some update to choose our preferred options to play while online.

I will keep playing it from time to time since its still fun but, even though I love Nintendo characters a tiny bit more, for me it can’t really compete against CrossWorlds in the kart racing department right now. Maybe in the future with some more content updates it can get on par to it, I hope.

I’m trying to play it now and then, but it almost feels like I have to force myself. It still feels like racing skills in single player are not rewarded, unlike MK8. I also thought we would have had the first (free?) DLC by now.
I’m waiting for a big patch that might never come.
