Gamers play their games for various reasons. Some experience them for fun, some to escape from reality for a short while, and others for brain training. If you’re a male, however, the main reason as to why you play a game might be due to the satisfaction of conquering things – people, territory – you name it. An experiment was conducted in which both males and females were hooked up to wires and were given the task of obtaining territory in a video game. In the end, it was determined that the men “were a lot more motivated to succeed.”

So, why do you game? And do you earn a big sense of achievement from winning?

Metal Gear Solid series will always be around

“MGS will always be around. I feel a responsibility to continue this series as long as users demand it. But it doesn’t mean I’m going to sit in completely. I’ll probably take a different role in the next game. Maybe I’ll sit in as producer and let the young staff take control of the new series. I really want to go on to new things.” – Hideo Kojima

Metal Gear Solid 4 may be the last title featuring Solid Snake, but the series isn’t leaving any time soon. Who knows how the next game will turn out. A new game in the series could appear on any system, as Kojima has expressed interest in the Wii and Xbox 360 (although he would most likely develop an entirely new title.) And of course, Snake’s final outing will be taking place on the PS3…So all platforms are up for grabs.

Nintendo Power teases its readers once again

The blurb at the bottom says, “Join us as we celebrate 20 years of Nintendo Power and Nintendo gaming in our special anniversary extravaganza! We’ve got loads of great games lined up, plus a few surprises. This is the issue you can’t miss!”

More surprises, eh Nintendo Power? Well, I hope the surprises in the next issues are actually surprising!

Capcom sets its sight on the big screen

Capcom, a gaming company that is well known for the development of a wide array of titles, seems to be shifting its focus slightly. CVG reports that Haruhiro Tsujimoto, President of Capcom, has expressed interest in creating movies out of its exisiting video game franchises. “We are in the process of working out contracts for several offers we received at the Cannes Film Festival last week and hope to make an announcement soon. If realized, the projects will have a big impact on the game and movie industries. We want to do with games what Marvel did with comics.” Capcom certainly has large ambitions, but video game to movie transitions have varied in quality. Everyone remembers the endearing, although abysmal Super Mario Bros. movie and countless other poor movie productions.

NASCAR: Wii Fit racer results

It was only a few days ago that Nintendo announced its continued support in NASCAR sports with its completely Wii Fit embellished race cars. Nintendo had revealed that it was throwing its support behind Alex Lloyd and Sterling Marlin for the big races today. Lloyd, driving the number 16 car in the Indianapolis 500, finished 25th while Marlin, who participated in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, ended up in the 31st spot. Not the best results that most had probably hoped for, but the two went against some pretty tough competition.

Rumor – Michael Bay producing Metroid movie

A good number of people have awful memories of the Super Mario Bros. from 1993. The movie was, perhaps, the biggest reason as to why some cringed at the thought of a live Zelda film. A Metroid movie, however, has been believed to be in production for many months now. Another rumor has been spreading which involves the producer of the film. Rumor has it that Micheal Bay, who most recently finished work on Transformers, will be producing the movie. Currently, Bay has film related work up until 2010, in which three movies will be released in 2009 and one for 2010. In one year four movies that involved Bay were released, so it is possible that he could have other projects in store.

Nintendo skips Leipzig for smaller venues

Nintendo is ditching Leipzig, for this year at least, in part because of the success of smaller events they have set up in the past. Of course, these events will be following E3. Some events will be for the media while others will be open to the public as well.

In August 2008, Nintendo Germany with its own booth at the Games Convention in Leipzig.
With smaller local events and national promotional tours, where some completely novel concepts for the portable Nintendo DS and the home console Wii were presented, the company has in recent months many positive experiences.
In the second half of 2008, Nintendo is therefore held to a central exhibition event in nationwide presence in a variety of living environments, his video games so with many opportunities to experience directly.

Itagaki gives accolades to Rockstar, violence in games

“People always use that [Grand Theft Auto] as an example of violence in games. But I don’t think there’s anyone who takes their job as seriously as the guys who make that game. You only have to look at all the detail in there. I believe we’re following morality as well in only showing violence between combatants. I think the ‘violence issue’ is something that is within each individual who plays the game.” – Tomonobu Itagaki

I have to agree that Rockstar Games does develop some amazing games – almost as if they were made at a pinpoint craft. Unfortunately, individuals will go against these types of games and will even go as far as to blame particular violent acts committed in real life on violent titles.

Ubisoft places trademark on “Play CamCam”

Ubisoft may finally be abandoning their notorious “Petz” label for their own developed camera. On May 9, the company registered the “Play CamCam” trademark most notably for “games software and electronic game programs” and “cartriges for console and individual, portable gaming systems.” Ubisoft is known for strictly publishing and developing software, so for the company to allow itself to step outside familiar territory could end up being dangerous. Nonetheless, it’s interesting as to what Ubisoft plans to use the camera for. Could we be in for a “Pets: Dogz Camera” title?
