Wii U

Precursor Games pledged support for Wii U in a big way when it announced Shadow of the Eternals for the console (and PC, later followed by PS4). Yet not all companies are willing to put out new titles for Nintendo’s system. There’s no denying that the Wii U is struggling, which is one of the big reasons why third-party support has been slim.

So what is it about the Wii U that drew Precursor to the console? Chief creative officer Denis Dyack pointed to a number of reasons in an interview with GameSpot:

“We like the Wii U. …Well, I think first of all we’re great friends with Nintendo. We love Nintendo. Also, Eternal Darkness got its roots with Nintendo and I think a spiritual successor should follow those roots and I think that was just natural. I also think that the controller and the system itself is very, very unique and leaves a lot of possibilities for us.”

Later in the interview, Dyack went on to speak about Nintendo’s recent struggles and said of the console race: it’s “way, way too early to tell.”

“I’m always very cautious about saying Nintendo’s put themselves in a corner or made a lot of huge mistakes because I’ve never seen a company surprise so many people and come out of nowhere to win and I think certainly this console race with the Wii U is way, way too early to tell. The people at Nintendo are extremely smart, really great people. We’ll see where it goes. I think it’s just too early to tell…”

I’ve started to pull back on posting ratings that don’t have any importance to them. But hey, it’s Zelda. And this is yet another reminder that it’s coming.

A number of retailers, including Best Buy, GameStop, and Target, appear to have stopped selling the Wii U Basic Set. The system is missing from each retailer’s website, leading to uncertainties regarding the product’s future. It’s also out of stock at Walmart – and it’s unknown if it will be coming back any time soon.

In other news, the Wii U Basic Set will be available for just $200 at Walmart starting on August 2.

I’d prefer not to make too much of this for now, but… the situation is curious, certainly…

Update: Amazon took down the video. Sorry guys.

Batman: Arkham Origins won’t have online multiplayer on Wii U, making it the only system missing out on the new feature.

As for why this is so, Warner Bros. explained in a statement that the team “is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest MP audience.” The publisher must have felt that it wasn’t worth pouring in resources into the Wii U due to the possibility of a lack of players.

A Warner Bros. representative told us:

“MP will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The team is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest MP audience.”

Capcom’s HD version of Resident Evil: Revelations shipped 900,000 units around the world during the three month period ending June 30. Note that shipped doesn’t fully translate to sold. Resident Evil series sales now stand at over 57 million units.

As far as Capcom’s actual financial results are concerned, the company’s net income decreased to ¥828 million ($135 million), leading to a 37.3 percent drop year-over-year. Net sales took a hit as well and lowered by 6.2 percent to ¥17.5 billion yen ($2.85 billion).

Capcom said of its financial results:

“Consolidated financial results for ended June 30, 2013 was decreased in sales and all profits from the same term last year, because of the lower ASP for the package software and the lack of major titles for the mobile contents in the Digital Content business.”

New versions of Monster Hunter Frontier G were announced in this week’s Famitsu. Previously released on the Xbox 360 and PC in Japan, the online title is now heading to the Wii U and PlayStation 3.

Director Tatsumi Kimoto and producer Kazunori Sugiura chatted about Monster Hunter Frontier G with Famitsu to discuss where Capcom is taking the game with these new platforms.

First, Kimoto provided the following overview:

“The biggest asset of MHFG is how it provides a continually-evolving hunting experience for you to enjoy through its regularly large-scale updates. That’s a unique attraction, the way the game changes with each update through its new monsters, weapons, and armor. With MHFG being online only, you can enjoy the game with hunters from all across the country, and we provide a wealth of content that lets you interact and work together with them. For someone just starting, it’s packed with so much content that you’ll never be able to digest it all.”
