What’s the “most complete” entry in the Final Fantasy series? According to original creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, that honor falls to Final Fantasy I.

Sakaguchi shared a few words about the game in an interview with Invervse. Sakaguchi said that Final Fantasy I is the “closest in its final form based on what we set out to achieve.” If he didn’t go with that game, Final Fantasy VI would be the next choice given how it stands out in the franchise and was the last true pixel art entry.

Sakaguchi said:

“Final Fantasy I, the moment we completed it and released it to the market, provided myself with a huge sense of accomplishment and achievement. Simply because it was the first game that we didn’t know what we were doing, and how the market would react at the time,” Sakaguchi says. “That’s the so-called ‘most complete’ Final Fantasy, or closest in its final form based on what we set out to achieve. Final Fantasy VI comes close, and does stand out above the other Final Fantasies, especially because it was the last Final Fantasy to use pixel art in all of its visual expression.”

Fans will soon be able to experience the latest game from Sakaguchi, Fantasian Neo Dimension. The game originally debuted on mobile and is now getting an updated version on Switch, which you can read about here.
