Inafune talks Mighty No. 9 film plans, also interested in manga, anime, TV
Keiji Inafune has big plans to turn Mighty No. 9 into a multimedia franchise.
We last heard that Contradiction Films writer and producer Tim Carter were working on a live adaptation of the game. Inafune tells Polygon that a movie deal hasn’t been set in stone, but “is something we are looking forward to and considering the possibilities of.”
He said:
“It’s not actually a 100 percent set deal yet. It is something we are looking forward to and considering the possibilities of. We are in talks with Contradiction about the possibility of making a live-action Mighty No. 9 movie.”
“We’ve directly talked with Contradiction about many possibilities and I’ve talked to them about the large picture, the Mighty No. 9 universe.
“Before seeing these I might not have thought you could take a game like Mighty No. 9 and make it into a live-action feature. But when you think about it, there are all of these comic book hero movies and most of them turned out pretty well as live-action movies. If those turned out well, why not Mighty No. 9?”
Contradiction will complete a movie script “in the near future.” “We’ll go over that and see how things go from there,” once that’s done.
Keep in mind that Contradiction isn’t a lock to make a Mighty No. 9 film. Inafune is also very much open to working with Universal or Warner Bros. if they were to express interest.
Aside from a movie, Inafune would “like there to be a comic book, manga, anime, movie, TV drama series. Any possibility you can think of.” Such opportunities are possible because Mighty No. 9’s “story as a whole we’re planning on making is a lot bigger than Mega Man was.” According to Inafune, “There are a lot of things in the story, a lot of things we’ve already considered and already have for Mighty No 9 that exists.”
“The story as a whole we’re planning on making is a lot bigger than Mega Man was. There are a lot of things in the story, a lot of things we’ve already considered and already have for Mighty No 9 that exists. With just one game we won’t be able to go over all of these things. If the movie does get made, it would be something else in the Mighty No. 9 universe, a different part of the huge picture, huge story.”
