2D Mario future Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a big milestone for a number of reasons. For one thing, it’s the first side-scrolling entry in the series in over a decade. And after four New Super Mario Bros. titles, Nintendo is finally going in a new direction.

Game Informer recently asked Super Mario Bros. Wonder producer Takashi Tezuka about the future, though he was noncommittal on the game leading to more releases like it in the future similar to what we saw from New Super Mario Bros. At the same time, he mentioned how it’s “a new phase”.

Tezuka said: “I believe that we have transitioned from the New Super Mario Bros. series into a new phase, but at this point, we have no idea what the next game style will be.”

Art director Masanobu Sato commented on things as well. He had this to say: “However, what we do know is that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has set a bigger stage for adventure for Mario and friends.”

Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches for Switch on October 20, 2023. Tezuka also recently commented on the game launching near Sonic Superstars, which you can read about here.
