Rumor: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown didn’t meet sales expectations, no sequel, team disbanded
October 22: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown won’t be getting a sequel as despite its critical success, from a sales standpoint, the game apparently didn’t meet expectations.
Origami Media reported on its findings today. Supposedly, while the team was interested in working on a sequel, Ubisoft wasn’t on board. It ultimately comes down to sales. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown didn’t sell what Ubisoft had hoped, and also felt that a new entry would impact the performance of the original game.
Here’s a translation of what Origami Media shared:
Internally, the fate of the game was already decided a few weeks after the release of the game, it was clear in Spring that after releasing a few DLCs and cosmetics it would be the end.
A few members of the core dev team fought to get a sequel greenlit which did not happen, then they pushed for two expansions hoping that it would work this time but it didn’t since Ubisoft needed more hands to help on other projects that had a better sales potential which wasn’t the case with Lost Crown not meeting sales expectations.
Another crazy justification that the dev team received from higher-ups was that releasing a sequel for the game would cannibalize long term sales of the first game.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown shipped its Mask of Darkness story DLC last month. Learn more about the new content here.

October 23: Insider Gaming now claims that former members of the team have moved on to a team working on a Rayman remake. Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, is reportedly on board as a consultant. Other members of the Prince of Persia team are apparently working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 and the next Ghost Recon title.
Update: Ubisoft has now confirmed it’s exploring some sort of Rayman game, but didn’t say what exactly that is. The official statement reads: “We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand. The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later.”
