In the eyes of Sonic Team head and Sonic Superstars producer Takashi Iizuki, pixel art won’t be a “viable” style in the future.

Iizuki was speaking with GamesRadar about SEGA’s upcoming game in a recent interview. Sonic Superstars will be using 2.5D visuals whereas past entries – going back to the franchise’s original days – used pixel art.

Iizuka explained his stance regarding pixel art:

“… we look at the pixel art – it’s great – but when we think about 10-20 years in the future, we don’t think it’s going to be a viable art style or presentation for our players. And in order to advance and really step things up, we did want to make sure that we’re presenting something that 10-20 years down the road we’re still evolving and creating new content for.”

The visuals won’t be the only thing new in Sonic Superstars. For the first time, you can play through the entire campaign with up to three other players with drop-in and drop-out co-op.

SEGA will be bringing Sonic Superstars to Switch on October 17, 2023.
