Square Enix announces new multiplatform strategy, includes Nintendo platforms
Square Enix today announced a new business strategy, which includes a shift in its releases on supported devices. As part of that change, it seems that the company will be pursuing Nintendo support more aggressively. This could include Switch, but certainly the next console as well.
Square Enix says it will “pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.” The company also mentioned: “Especially, in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles.”
We should point out that Square Enix has long brought its games to various platforms. However, there have been various exclusives over the years. Octopath Traveler was originally a Switch-only RPG, for instance. Also, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth have only been available on PlayStation as far as consoles go.
All of this is being done due to various games missing their targets and Square Enix being unhappy with its financial performance. The company also intends to focus on quality over quantity, so it seems like we won’t be seeing quite as many releases going forward.
