Stardew Valley creator against overloading the game with content, but doesn’t want to close the book definitively

NPR recently caught up with Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone, who addressed the game’s future.

There are two sides to the coin here. First, Barone acknowledged that he has some caution as overloading the game with too much content, which could be “detrimental”. But even if he decides to end support at some point, he doesn’t want to definitively close the book – “even 50 years from now,” he said.

Barone explained the following in an interview with NPR:

“I think so because I think a game can have too much content. And I want – I ultimately want Stardew Valley to be the best game it can be. So if I feel like, you know, it’s starting to become kind of overwhelmed with content to the point where it’s detrimental to the game’s, like, entertainment factor, I would stop at that point. Another thing is I do want to make more than one game in my life. It’s – I’ve been – you know, including the development time, I’ve been working on Stardew Valley for over 12 years now. But I don’t want to definitively say that the book is ever closed because I think that I will always have a desire to come back and maybe add a thing or two. You know, maybe even 50 years from now, I might add something. We’ll see.”

Barone previously announced his new game Haunted Chocolatier over three years ago. There’s still no word on when it could be launching. A big part of the wait is because of Stardew Valley. With Barone going back to that game with more updates, Haunted Chocolatier has been put on the backburner.
