Super Mario movie seemingly delayed to holiday 2023

Posted on September 7, 2022 by in General Nintendo, News

Original: Illumination Studios Paris has recently updated their official website page for the upcoming Super Mario movie, and this has led to a few interesting details popping up. First of all, the title of the film is listed as “Super Mario Bros. Animated Film”, which means “Super Mario Bros.” is likely just a working title. More interestingly though is the given release date.

While the date on the left lists Holiday 2022, an outdated release date that was changed to April 2023 a few months ago, the right side lists a new date of “holiday 2023”, possibly indicating that the movie has once again been delayed, this time from its previously mentioned April 2023 release.

There haven’t yet been any official statements from Illumination or Nintendo regarding a new release date for the film. It is technically possible that this new date is an error, particularly considering that the date on the left reflects the original holiday 2022 release, but there’s no way to know for sure.

A few months ago, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed that the movie was roughly “three-quarters done”, which is interesting to note considering this new potential delay. Hopefully fans won’t have to wait an additional eight months to see Mario revisit the silver screen.

Update: Illumination has since updated its website, and the previously-announced “Spring 2023” window is listed. It’s possible that what was up there previously was an error.
