Nintendo has had continued success with Switch since the system launched in 2017. The pattern has continued through this year, and 2020 may actually be the platform’s best year yet from a sales perspective.

That’s further backed up by the NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella. In a tweet shared earlier today, Piscatella revealed that in the United States, Switch sold more hardware units in Q3 than any platform since the DS in 2009.

2020 has been a strong year for the gaming industry overall. Total industry consumer spending on video gaming in the U.S. reached $11.2 billion in the third quarter, a 24 percent increase year-over-year.

Nintendo Switch

We heard earlier today that Switch was again the best-selling console in the United States. That piece of information was more important than initially thought, as the system has set a new record.

Following what took place in September, Switch has been the best-selling console in the U.S. since December 2018. That marks 22 consecutive months that this has happened, and a new record has been set. The Xbox 360 previous held the record with 21 consecutive months, which took place between August 2011 and April 2013.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Super Mario 3D All-Stars narrowly missed out on the top spot as the best-selling release of September in the United States. We now have more news from this month’s NPD report that gives an even greater idea of its impressive debut.

The launch month physical dollar sales for Super Mario 3D All-Stars rank as the sixth biggest for a Nintendo-published title in U.S. history. Additionally, it generated the second-highest launch month physical dollar sales of any 2020 release – only Animal Crossing: New Horizons was bigger. We’ll also mention that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is already the tenth best-selling game of 2020 year-to-date.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars launched in mid-September, so NPD’s report doesn’t account for a full month – making the game’s strong start even more meaningful.

Nintendo Switch

In the United States last month, Switch was again the best-selling console. That goes for both dollar and unit sales.

Hardware spending has increased 22 percent year-to-date when compared to a year ago, to $2.3 billion. Thanks to growth in sales of Switch, the system was able to offset declines on other console platforms.

Nintendo Switch

Switch continued its success in the United States last month. As has been the norm, it was again the best-selling hardware platform of August.

That’s not the only piece of notable information. Switch has set a new August hardware dollar sales record in the United States, surpassing the August 2008 dollar sales of Wii. Additionally, Switch unit volume more than doubled when compared to a year ago.
