Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong review

System: Switch
Release date: September 28, 2023 (Europe) / December 5 (North America)
Developer: Big Bad Wolf
Publisher: Nacon

Vampire the Masquerade is a series that has been around for a surprisingly long time, lurking in the shadows of tabletop roleplaying games since the early 90s as part of the larger World of Darkness series. It has been adapted into video game format a few times over the years, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is the third of these games to come to Nintendo’s console. Unfortunately, it has not been worth the extremely long wait, and is something I wouldn’t recommend to even the most avid fans of the series.

Vampire The Masquerade - Swansong release date

Original (9/10): The Switch version of Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong finally has a release date. According to an eShop listing, Nacon will be publishing it on September 28, 2023.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong was first announced in 2019 while it was confirmed for Switch a year later. The launch was first scheduled for 2021. However, in July 2021, it was delayed to February 2022. We then heard that very month that the Switch version would be coming at a later date. The game ended up launching in May 2022, so it’s been a lengthy wait for the Switch version.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong delayed

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong has been delayed and will no longer release in February 2022 as originally planned. Rather than launching in February, the title is now set for May 19, 2022.

In a statement, publisher Nacon and developer Big Bad Wolf explained that the move was made “to ensure the highest possibly quality while retaining a healthy work-life balance for our team.” The extra time “will allow us to apply some additional polish and give us some extra time for QA.”

The full statement reads:

Vampire The Masquerade - Swansong music

Today, publisher Nacon and developer Big Bad Wolf shared a new developer diary for Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong that largely focuses on the game’s music. In it, composer Olivier Deriviere discusses his creative process for composing the themes of each of the heroes.

The game has a few key characters with Galeb’s sense of justice and honor, Leysha’s tenderness for her daughter, and Emem’s desire for freedom and her status as queen of the night. Nacon notes that Deriviere drew his inspiration from the background of these characters to produce a unique musical world.

Vampire The Masquerade Swansong Emem

Publisher Nacon and developer Big Bad Wolf Studio today introduced Emem as the third and final playable character in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong. This follows the previous reveals of Galeb and Leysha.

Emem may look like a young woman with magnetic charm, but Emem is actually a 100 year-old vampire. She’s a former jazz diva that now belongs to the Toreador clan after having been transformed by Hilda, the love of her life.
