Reggie says Nintendo will “have a big E3 this year”, showcasing games for both Switch and 3DS

Posted on March 26, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News, Switch

You never quite know what you’ll get out of Nintendo from E3. A few years ago, the big N ditched conferences on stage in favor of Digital Events. In 2016, they scrapped its usual pre-recorded presentation entirely and had Zelda: Breath of the Wild as its only playable game.

So what’s in store for this year? Going off of a new statement from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, who recently spoke with Fox News, fans can expect “a big E3”. In addition to games for Switch, Nintendo will be showing what it has in store for 3DS.

Reggie’s full words:

“E3 is always a big time for Nintendo. We look at each E3 as a unique opportunity to tell our story. And we’re gonna have a big E3 this year. We’re going to be showcasing a variety of games. We will have experiences for… consumers will be able to attend the show for the very first time. So I’m not gonna tell you all of the various games and all of our little secrets for E3, but I can tell you that E3 is going to be a major opportunity for us to showcase not only Nintendo Switch, but also content coming to Nintendo 3DS.”

Going off of past years, we can probably look forward to hours of live streams from the Nintendo Treehouse. That has been a staple of Nintendo’s E3 plans since 2014.

Yes please! Zelda was nice to watch last year but wasn’t quite enough, especially with the Pokemon section only showing off like 2 new Pokemon. There’s so many Switch titles I’m interested in and hopefully a few 3DS localisations coming.

  • Roto Prime

Yes, please, I will take MoHun XX HD/3DS….um, and Zelda multiplayer expansion for breath of the wild with custom persona and local play!

    • Supporter

Also, Monster Hunter Stories localized with amiibo!

    • GoldenTriforce

      Please no multiplayer Zelda

      • Tlink7

Online multiplayer BotW sounds pretty amazing to me

        • ForeVision

Btw T, if you get such a dislike for Guardians like I have, fret not you shall have your revenge and laughing moments against them. Their laser now hits me for 1 heart, and I just lie on the ground laughing.

          • Tlink7

I just run away immediately when I see one xD Stone Talus is also still too difficult (found one on a tiny island, not enough space to dodge his attacks for me :D)

          • JJ

Just jump on his back and use your hammer or other powerful weapon on his “ore”.

          • ForeVision

You do know how to beat them right? They can’t actually hit you all the well if you know what to do (hint, what do you do with normal rocks/cliff sides etc, when you want to get to the top?)

          • Tlink7

I know I have to jump ontop of them, but eventually you get knocked off (usually into the water on that small island) and then he crushes me because swimming is so slow 😀

          • ForeVision

Huh, must’ve been one I overlooked because the one I remember was pretty far from any water. Let me tell you one thing though, hot and cold rocks are a thing, so you’ll be meeting specific Taluses 😛

          • ForeVision

Regular people ride horses, Link isn’t one of them (sorry, I had to): https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1802a5e2226ad204075d317418ebeba9709217cf9c8f965419b4ae7b19493cf6.jpg

          • R.Z.

For Taluses you can bomb their arms too, it stuns them and makes them “kneel” to get new ones from the ground, which opens possibility for attacks. You could even defeat them just by throwing bombs at their arms and backs, but it takes a while.

About Guardians, if you have some arrows and some weapons with about 20-30 attack or more, they are relatively easy if you can find a solid element to hide behind. Keep the thing beteen you and then, stun them by shooting the eye and use that downtime to hack at their limbs. Once they can’t move it’s a simple matter of stunning them when they start charging the beam and hacking.

Of course depending on how far you are, it may be better to skip them until you get enough hearts so they don’t one-shot you, because there’s always the risk of a hit here and there.

For Linels though I have no idea what to do with the beasts, I only managed to kill one at the expense of some 5 heart-bonus meals and a whole load of bomb arrows.

          • Tlink7

I’ll try throwing bombs at the Talus next time, thanks 😀

          • ForeVision

When they fall over, it’s best to climb on top of them, and hit their weak spot, the ore-node on their head (which will be located directly on their back on some occasions). Them throwing you off does nearly no damage, and you can just rinse and repeat knocking them over, and then climbing their head to hit the ore-node. You can also shoot the ore-node with arrows, which is a good way to kill them when they’re nearly dead. Bombs work well to destroy their arms, which knocks them offer and forces them to “make a new one”. Just a little extra explanation to go with R.Z.’s note.

Guardians can be one-shot (in the eye), but you need special ancient arrows for that. You can get those made regularly, but it costs 400 Rupees per bushel of 5 arrows, and you need ancient guardian materials to make them.

          • Tlink7

I know the knocking-me-off does no damage, but on that little island I got thrown into the water, making me sluggish and an easy target for a pummelling that does one-shot me xD

          • ForeVision

You have that cryo-ability right? Why not freeze a wall behind you and try to fight from there?

          • ForeVision

Lynels’ difficulty ranges (in this case easiest to hardest) from the being maned red-blue-white-silver, and depending on the weapon they wield sword and board-spear-mace.

The best way to beat a Lynel, is to get used to it’s attack pattern. The sword and board one gives you plenty of opportunity for a flurry attack when you do a backflip dodge at the right moment, which is 90% of his up-close attacks, hence this setup being easiest.

The spear variant is a step up, as these don’t do easily dodge-able attacks, and tend to go for charges and special jump-moves instead. I found it best to block his attacks.

The mace wielding one takes the cake, by doing 2 full-round swings up close or a 3 times forward smash (I think there was also a ground-slam styled attack) I’ve had a lot of trouble with these overall, but I think I’ll try parry/blocking his hits.

The Lynel, every variant, has the ability to breathe 3 fire balls at you in quick succession, do a charge attack based on their weapon, and if you keep your distance, they start firing arrows either regular shots 3-5 at a time (you get this as well if you get their bow, 5 being a special affix) or start shooting pin-point accuracy that, can only be dodged by running like a madman, into the sky. Keep in mind, they always have special arrows, and they’re usually shock arrows.

Then there’s one last thing I’d like to tell everyone who reads this, and please consider this carefully: When getting later into the game, weapons will start having effects to them, such as durability up, or a really large amount of damage increase. This effect applies to you when you get the weapon, BUT also to it’s original wielder. I found out the hard way when Lynels start hitting like dump trucks and they drop a weapon that has +44 attack on it:

            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6946f2dd318aa42eee108385aabf6da36d1f23eaed939940ad2ffaf557d696e0.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6946f2dd318aa42eee108385aabf6da36d1f23eaed939940ad2ffaf557d696e0.jpg

          • R.Z.

            Thanks for the tips !
So far I have only beaten the Lynel at Polymus mount, and He’s one of the easier variety.
I must say I’m pretty awful at timing my dodges/perfect guards, it’s like I can do a couple and then it’s over and I screw up each and every one of them (I managed to deflect a guardian twice in a row once, then went through my whole shield supply and eventually died … fun times 😛 ).

About dodges, am I right in thinking that it’s not just a timing thing like in Bayonetta/Smash Bros./ MH sometimes but you actually need to dodge the hitbox ? I managed a bunch of flurry rushes on the Lynel, especially with the charges (slo-mo activating while the guy was still some 5m away … wtf ?), but then seemed to F-up each one and just got trumpled.

          • ForeVision

As far as I know, it’s a timing thing, but I have noticed that it’s a little off some time, so I guess it’s either as you say, or very precise timing. That said, if you have fully upgraded Guardian Armor (84 defense) the sword and board lynel hits you for 1 heart, I’ve not tried the mace one yet, since they have a tendency to be in spots where you need to have armor that helps with temperatures, but I know one to visit.

          • R.Z.

So far my best armors have less than 10 in defence, so I still need a little time for that …

          • ForeVision

Once you’ve got access to ancient arrows, it’s a matter of luck (drop-rates of certain rare items) and a bit of skill (hitting the eye can be tricky when they’re moving, especially with the flying ones, but you can destroy their propellers as well, which makes them unable to do anything any more)

          • R.Z.

So far I have “farmed” the couple of guardians in Akala near the lake, but the yield is not enough to upgrade more than one element of the set each time. I’m thinking of trying to take down some flying guardians in that region too, since they don’t pose much threat, but seeing as they are hard to reach I’m afraid it will cost me a lot of arrows (the ancient ones are too costly for now).

          • ForeVision

There’s a couple of shrines that give you guaranteed cores, a quick search around the net should help with these. I also don’t know for sure, but when grinding guardians at my point, I found cores, and ancient cores, much more often.

But back to the point, I don’t know where you are in the story, but if you do the Vah Naboris part (no spoilers, fear not) you’ll venture into territory with enemies that drop 2-shot bows for you. This also means firing 2 ancient arrows, and considering their power, it’s definitely worth thinking about.

          • R.Z.

I am not yet in a part of the game where I feel like seriously farming stuff, I feel more like going back to some regions to complete sets of armor or some quests and advancing the story a bit (I just have one region left to explore, but still two “dungeons” that I haven’t touched). I have plenty of ancient cores from shrines so far, what’s holding me back the most is the cogs actually.
But I’ll keep your tips in mind for when the right time comes, though it may take a while since I arbitrarily decided to NEVER teleport.

          • ForeVision

Ahh yes, it does instil that feeling of exploration. I do the exploring part myself now, since the pressure to crush Ganon is off of my shoulders (playing post-game now).

Let me give you a vague hint that may be interesting for you to pursue: There are special creatures in the world (they’re quite big so hard to miss) that are basically loot-piñatas. They won’t actually attack you, but will fire off elemental attacks from their bodies that damage you should you come into contact with them, same goes for their actual bodies. If you fire arrows at a certain part of their body, they will drop a glowing drop (only once per time that they spawn) that has a variety of uses, and those from harder to fire at places are required for high-end armor upgrades. One of these creatures requires you to cleanse her first, as she’s in a bit of a pickle let’s just say.

As for the cogs, it’s simply a case of crushing the guardians for parts. One tip I’ll give, is that you get extra parts for first cutting off their legs. You do need a fairly strong weapon for this however (as in don’t start using a twig for it :P)

          • R.Z.

“Cleansing” that one was the first major thing that I (accidentally) did in the game, before even seeing Impa.
It was a neat surprise, though I think it cost me pretty much every arrow I had on me at the time.
I think it’s probably the best battle of the game.

About guardians I ended up wandering central Hyrule for a bit today and I offed some of them.
Turns out I had way more ancient arrows than I remembered buying, so after doing a few of them the old fashioned way I just went and one-shot them.
I should have enough materials for a few upgrades the next time I see a great fairy.

          • ForeVision

Have you visited the mountainous regions of Akkala?

          • R.Z.

I visited most of Akkala, but the mountains to the south and west are part of other regions.
I found the spring in that region if that’s what you’re getting at, but I didn’t make the offering yet.

          • ForeVision

Yes, my apologies if being ambiguous, it’s due to spoilers and how people can get quite annoyed by that. Akkala has a special spot in my hate list, due to a little “run-in” I had with a guardian there. Basically shot me straight off my horse while I was trying to outrun it. Is it any wonder that I’ve furiously hunted them since? It’s not for nothing that I had (turned some of them in) 300+ screws 200+ of some other materials and generally 50 of the others. I make it my special assignment to thoroughly destroy every guardian that crosses my path, and will gladly deviate my path in a different direction if that means destroying more guardians.

          • R.Z.

I had some trouble with a stationary guardian that you kind of have to pass there, it set my horse on fire (luckily it was a strong one), but it may not be the one you are talking about ?
It’s fun how the game can make people feel strongly about some stuff.
I have a special hate for mounted bokoblins since one of them killed a horse that I had just tamed with a single shot (well, actually I stole it from these same bokoblin, but whatever …). I wasn’t planning on keeping the poor thing anyway, but what a bunch of a-holes !

          • ForeVision

The death of a comrade in arms, especially since you don’t get many of those, is always one to be avenged. No the one I meant was one of the 2 walking Guardians among the field of scrapped ones, down from the tower. Akkala stands synonimous with “Guardian Country ” for me (even though Hyrule Central has more of them, but eh, Ganon).

Later in the game though, with fully upgraded guardian armor, their lasers hit you for 1 heart, and they just lose all their intimidation factor and power. You can literally just run them over and not even feel any fear for them. I genuinely felt like I had to do all I could to get away from them in the beginning, but now I just casually hunt them all down.

          • ForeVision

There’s a little something I forgot about another move that you should definitely know R.Z. It’s at the part where I mention what every Lynel can do, no matter their weapon.

Also my apologies for the length of the post, and that I cannot TL:DR it, it’s just that much specific info 😛

        • GoldenTriforce

BoTW is supposed to be an immersive single player game, multiplayer wouldn’t work well at all, Xenoblade X is an example of that.

          • Tlink7

I don’t really see a lot of similarities between X and BotW besides both having an open world. I’d love to go hunting or Ganonslaying with a buddy. It would not surprise me if Nintendo made another multiplayer Zelda if the Switch does well.

          • GoldenTriforce

I’d be fine with a separate Zelda being multiplayer, but Zelda, like Xenoblade, is designed to be an immersive single player game, and I feel like adding on multiplayer to that, even if optional wouldn’t work well. If they made a new Zelda (spin-off hopefully) that was based on breath of the wild (as in using the same engines and some of the same assets) but was built around multiplayer, then I think it would work better.

          • Tlink7

Just patched-in multiplayer would be something I’d still use, but I prefer a stand-alone title as well. Spin-off title like Four Swords GBA, Four Swords GC and Triforce Heroes could happen if the Switch is popular

          • Eileen the Pizza Queen

I can only speak for myself here, but both Xenoblade Chronicles X and Breath of the Wild quickly degenerated into me exploiting physics to fudge my way up cliffsides long before I was “supposed” to. At least in BotW this seems to be intended, unlike XCX where I’d just take flying leaps into walls until I found the spot where it lets me stand on a vertical surface. XD

          • Tlink7

Well my opinion isn’t worth too much because I haven’t played XCX xD but from what I can tell, XCX is a lot more story-focussed, where BotW puts more emphasis on adventuring.
Haha, you should become a beta tester, scrutinising each wall for possible wonky surfaces 😀

          • ForeVision

She’d have a blast in World of Warcraft then. Or a nightmare, depending on how one looks at it.

    • hi v3.0

No, but TriForce Heroes 2 and MH5 will be nice 🙂

  • Emufred

Assuming its an e3 direct again

-New trailer of Mario Odyssey (2-3 minutes)
-New trailer of Xenoblade 2 (2-3 minutes)
-New trailer of Fire Emblem Warriors (2-3 minutes)
-New Splatoon 2 trailer (assuming it releases after E3) (2-3 minutes)
    -New IP(5 minutes)
    -NINDIES!!!111 (5-10 minutes)
    -Switch Ports (??? minutes)
    -3DS games (??? minutes)
    -Possible Metroid annoucement (5 minutes)

This is what I expect, but hopefully Nintendo blows my expectations away.

    • Tide

He said “interactive experiences” in the interview so im fairly certain he was talking about E3 specifically.

    • nemo37

I hope we get Metroid Prime for Switch (a 2D Metroid for Switch would also be cool, although I would prefer a 3D one first) and a new mainline Pokemon game (I would be okay with the so-called Pokemon Stars which is rumored to be the third game in relation to Sun and Moon). A few Wii U ports for the Switch would also be good and maybe a general VC announcement.

    • burchdude65

There’s no guarantee that it will be a Digital Event. This is the Switch era. Nintendo has been changing things up lately, and the Switch Presentation is a big example.

      • Seeker

I think you mean SWITCHing things up.

    • Roto Prime

      Good list!!

    • ben

I am expecting to see 2018 games. The games you listed have almost all been shown. I expect to see a Platinum games game.Fire Emblem switch and Shin megami tensei as well as some more Western IP. Probably that ubisoft exclusive that has been rumoured. not the rabbids one. Also I am expecting live presentation not direct.

    • Puffdaddy

Honestly, I’m good with that list. I’m expecting RabbidsX Mario RPG to be shown at E3 so that would be the new IP. If they show off that, along with Pokemon Stars and Smash Deluxe with a surprise Metroid announcement, they have a set E3. A Monster Hunter Switch with a January 2018 release would be exciting as well but I’m trying to be realistic.

      • Nowhere Man

Rabbids x Mario is not a new IP lol. It’s a spinoff with two existing IPs.

    • Tlink7

Hoping for Metroid is unfortunately quite the gamble >.<

    • R.Z.

I have a feeling it may be an Animal Crossing year.
I have had that feeling for several years in a row though …

  • Exy

This is the evil cycle with Switch now. I think, man, I need more Switch games, then I remind myself there’s E3. But then we’ll have to wait for the games announced at E3 to actually come out.

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

It’s a better cycle than knowing nothing in the pipeline like Wii U’s first 2 years.

  • KnightWonder

I know the Treehouse is mostly despised by many, but I’ve honestly come to love the Treehouse livestreams.

    • awng781

Outside of localization complaints (that I personally don’t care that much about), I think the Treehouse does a great job at showing off Nintendo content to the western audiences.

      • KnightWonder

I just like how they don’t talk in boring business talk. They sound like they’re actually having fun playing the games, while explaining them.

        • Switchling

And sometimes they’re actually decently good at the games they play (ie. Arms)

          • That helps a whole lot, lol. Watching them play XCX was fun.

        • Chiquitajgarcia

        • Agreed. You can see it in some of their localization detailing too, when they discuss it.

      • hi v3.0

Yeah I just don’t like their localization but I do enjoy their livestreams

    • DeltaPeng

I like the Treehouse and Nintendo Directs, it is definitely better than PR talk, and adds a more personal touch whereas the other companies just seem like businesses. Cold, heartless, businesses.

Well, not that extreme. But it does allow Nintendo to be more down to earth and creative, I like this format the best so far.

    • Tlink7

It is cool to hate them right now

      • Gregory Weagle

Except they have been doing it long before Treehouse became their target of hate. See Wii and DS in 2006. People hating Nintendo is not a new thing.

        • Tlink7

Hating Treehouse is a new thing though 😛

          • ForeVision

Depending on whether I’m included in said hating, it’s aimed squarely at their work in Fates, not judging anything else they’ve done. I hear they’ve worked on BotW as well, and I’ve no trouble with that at all.

    • NeptuniasBeard

They’re despised by some. Just that some won’t shut up about it…

      • ForeVision

I’d just like to add that I don’t hate their streams, merely find them rather boring (they give me the impression of people who are overly hard trying to make it seem interesting). I do like the way Speedrunners do their streams, it’s interesting to hear how they’re doing their runs and what glitches they’re using.

        • NeptuniasBeard

Oh I totally agree with you there. I can’t really watch Treehouse streams at all when certain people are up there. One chick in particular creeps me the hell out.

If Bill/Reggie or one of the devs are up there, then I’ll consider checking it out. Otherwise yeah, they’re quite boring a lot of times imo.

          • ForeVision

Bill and Reggie I can watch, or if they bring Mr.Miyamoto on stage, that’s not an issue. And said chick, is it that blonde woman per chance? I don’t know their names 😛

          • NeptuniasBeard

I haven’t seen her since E3, but I’m pretty sure she had black/brown hair.

Not Audrey, she’s fine, but this chick would always try to smile and talk at the same time, and it made her seem like someone who has a bunch of ex-boyfriends chained up in her basement or something lol

          • ForeVision

Straps them to their chairs and smiles while playing games that make them cringe, I can see that being a thing. But yes, here’s hoping they get some more presentation skills, or they let the games do the talking. A good game, honestly, speaks for itself.

          • OMG, please tell me it’s the chick with the darkish, red hair!?? Who was in the XCX video? I don’t dislike her, but yeah.

I feel they need. . . I hesitate to say it on a public forum. . . more diversity. It would help for me while watching their livestreams.

          • NeptuniasBeard

That does sound pretty familiar. I suppose I should just look it up, but the nightmares have finally subsided lol.

I’d be down for more diversity for their streams. They seem to want to stick everyone in the same cliques for some reason… shaking up the teams would be good enough for me tbh

          • Lol, please don’t do it. It’s not worth it. If that is her. . . the images won’t leave my head, and I don’t want you to be inudated with them as well.

Right? It would be very nice.

  • Will believe it when I see it, and so much for the 3DS being dead eh? Switch is totally a 3Ds successor.

    • theFooFighter

Honestly this is normal it’s just not normal for Nintendo. Nintendo usually drops their systems like they’re on fire as soon as a successor releases even when they’re successful but Sony and Microsoft systems always have a few years of life after new hardware releases. Hell the ps3 is getting persona 5 in like 9 days

      • The Wii U, which is what the Switch IS the successor of, was dropped, heck it was dropped even before the Switch so… eh. I just don’t see it. The Switch is a home console and the 3DS is a handheld. Whether or not an actual 3DS successor actually comes (doubtful, mobile has eaten that market basically) doesn’t change the fact that the Switch is not a 3DS successor. And well yeah you don’t have to remind me *points at avatar* but that was only because Atlus didn’t want to upset fans and why ditch the work they already had done for it even if the sales will be/were non-existent for that version (especially in the US), the fact that only the PS4 version gets a steelbook and the premium edition shows how they feel about the PS3 version. Though I do get your point you were trying to make. And you said it yourself this is abnormal if the situation were what people act like it is when it really isn’t.

      • hi v3.0

But not for handhelds aka 3DS

    • DeltaPeng

I originally hoped Switch WOULD succeed both WiiU and 3DS (for the dream of having everything unified), but with time, I see the merits to 3DS continuing on it’s own path as a dedicated and more affordable handheld.

3DS has a few extra features, a solid design (2 screen, clamshell) with a large userbase, is more affordable, easier to dev for (lower res graphics) and really, if you buy your kid a handheld, would you get them a Switch or a 3DS? Probably a 3DS, because it’s cheaper and many times more durable.

Despite popular opinion, I love the WiiU a lot as well, and if Switch was more like an upgraded WiiU, I wouldn’t of minded. My WiiU’s disc drive is about dead though, same thing happened to the Wii, so I do much prefer the cartridge based games over disc.

Per the Switch, I do love it’s form factor a lot and hope they continue to work with and expand upon it. The controllers are workable, but can give me hand cramps over time (could stand to be larger, and with the left joycon stick not being so stiff or not pushing back as much). I think a Switch XL would suit that well and be pretty awesome, someday, maybe. Other than that, they really could stand to have more games or to get VC up and running, but that’ll come with time.

      • Bart

Ah, dead cd drives, the bane of my existance ever since the 90s… I was so happy when it got confirmed Switch would use cartridges, was pretty much an instant buy for me right then and there.

Also, about durability, after seeing that video of those guys throwing a switch around that was on here recently, looks to me like it is more than durable enough, not so sure a 3DS would survive the same treatment actually. (I could be wrong, but I’m sure as hell not gonna try it out…)

        • DeltaPeng

Do you mean the video where some guys threw the Switch into the dock? I think that video was edited/faked, but yeah, I’m not going to try it ;p

If anything, the Switch scratches a ton easier. My joycons have a few scuffs on them from something. The 3DS, at least screen-wise, is much more protected thanks to the clamshell design

          • Bart

Yeah, I’m a fan of the clamshell design too, it is of course better when it comes to scratches and stuff. But as far as dropping it on the ground a bunch of times and it still working? I dunno… But now that you’ve made me think about it, you kinda do have to take their word for it the Switch still worked after they played frisbee with it and stuff, I suppose it could have been edited… And no sane person would treat their system like that anyway so… Whatever. xD

  • theFooFighter

Nintendo going all out is basically a given. Mario, Xenoblade, fire emblem switch and warriors, arms, splatoon ECT and we’re definitely going to get new announcements along with a few new IP or IP revivals. I’m just curious to see what kind of 3rd party stuff we’ll be getting. The switch definitely isn’t getting everything but I’m sure it will get a handful of noteworthy ports

  • link2metroid

    Reggie you’re full of crap.

    • awng781

      lol
For what?? Saying that Nintendo will show off new games at E3?? That’s “crap”??

      • KnightWonder

Don’t waste your breath. He’s just a troll.

        • GoldenTriforce

Shouldn’t this site have admins, or is that not a feature of Disqus?

          • FutureFox

It’s a feature. Some admins just don’t use it apparently.

          • GoldenTriforce

            Ah okay

  • Sonic Wind

inb4 “why are 3ds games still being made??”

  • Switchling

why are 3ds games still being made??

    • ronin4life

Because 3ds only recently became outsold WW by ps4, loads of titles haven’t been relased locally that have been around for months if not years in Japan, it has a more stable and solid userbase for software purchases than any other console, is cheap and kid friendly.

There are loads of reasons really. Most basically, it is cheap to develop for and solidly established to sell on.

      • MajoraMan28

Source for the PS4 ww sales passing 3DS sales?
Bc I think that’s BS. The PS4 isn’t exploding like that in sales

        • hi v3.0

While I don’t think PS4 outsold 3DS yet but it is very close. 3DS isn’t that popular as you think. 1/3 of 3DS sales came from Japan. PS4 is much more popular than 3DS outside Japan and I’m surprised if you didn’t know it
And yes, PS4 IS exploding like that in sales, like it or not.

        • CarBon7911

I think the reason why PS4 sales is exploding is because their rival Xbox is not doing well lately + the ability to play most of their games on PC, making the PS4 is the go console for exclusive.

    • Melatelo

I have a similar opinion as I always had in mind the Switch is something that Nintendo should put 100% of their focus and development costs towards. It would be good for Nintnedo to just focus on one platform which they really haven’t ever been able to do. I do realise though at the same time there is a big audience there that Nintendo still want to capture.

      • Supporter

I definitely agree with you and many others who would like the Switch to be Nintendo’s main focus, but why do people want it so fast? The Wii U is already being abandoned and not everyone who’s interesting in the Switch can get one yet, so why not at least keep the 3DS alive a little longer?

The DS even had games from Nintendo up to 2012 and from third parties even last year (digitally)! So I doubt the 3DS will disappear when the Switch launched less than a month ago.

    • Supporter

The 3DS is still successful (especially in Japan) and a lot of people who would like the Switch don’t have one yet. So why not release a handful more 3DS games?

The DS had games after the 3DS launched, because it was super popular and not everyone who was interested in the 3DS got it straight away. I don’t know why this is so hard for people to understand.

I want the Switch to be successful and be Nintendo’s focus, but it just launched less than a month ago. Nintendo’s not going to drop both the Wii U and 3DS just because the Switch launched. The 3DS can have a few more games this year and even early next year while more people buy the Switch, right?

    • Bart

      Because 3DS is awesome. 🙂

    • hi v3.0

Because most Japanese 3rd parties are not ready for Switch yet, bunch of Atlus games has been announced for 3DS so far

    • Gregory Weagle

Because Switch’s production supply is still too low and 3DS still has a large enough install base. Nintendo is going to keep 3DS on a bit longer. It has happened before with NES and SNES.

  • awng781

Here is a solid list of rumored first party Switch games that I think Nintendo may unveil and/or detail at E3:
    – Pokémon “Stars”
    – An enhanced Smash Bros port
    – A new mainline Pikmin game that Miyamoto has hinted at before
    – Retro’s new game, which is supposedly a new IP
    – A new Metroid game
I’d also expect more solid release dates for Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Xenoblade 2.

As for the 3DS, I honestly don’t expect much. I think Nintendo will talk about Ever Oasis and the Pikmin Sidescroller (both of which were announced last year, but have since gone under the radar), along with maybe another surprise or two, and that’s it. The main focus will be on the Switch.

    • Why are people still going on about the fake rumour regarding Stars? Will people finally admit it isn’t real after E3?

      • Switchling

        Stars is fake af.

      • awng781

Because it is probably real, given that it was leaked by Eurogamer, the same guys who leaked the Switch/NX itself.

        • Switchling

          I also leaked the Switch.

          • awng781

            lmao nice to know.
Still doesn’t change anything I just said.

        • It isn’t real though. No point in arguing this. I would like to know though in all seriousness though if people will stop talking about it, if it doesn’t show at E3.

          • awng781

And you know that it isn’t real…how??

          • I don’t know for a fact as that would require insider knowledge I don’t have, it is just that based on what we know to be true it seems extremely Farfetch’d (Pokemon joke haha). Like I said I am more interested in knowing whether or not that people will drop this idea of it being real if it doesn’t show at E3. It seems that is what a lot of people are pinning their hopes on. So if it doesn’t show will people drop it or keep moving their guesses as to when it will be revealed believing against belief that it is still actually real. If they do then will they drop it if it doesn’t show during 2017? Like how long will it take if it continues to not show up for people to stop acting like it is real?

          • awng781

If Pokémon Stars isn’t shown at E3, then it has either been delayed (more likely) or it is completely fake (less likely).

          • …I will do my best to ignore your parenthesised text. So you are saying though that people will likely continue believing it to be real even if it doesn’t show up at E3? So when will people give up hope then? End of the year? Next E3 (if there is one)? When?

          • awng781

I don’t know how other people will react if Pokémon Stars isn’t shown off before/at E3. All I know for sure is that no Pokémon at E3 = No Pokémon game on the Switch in 2017.

            2018 is a different story.

          • Obviously, Pokemon (mainline) is announced early in the year usually. But yeah I suppose you wouldn’t be able to speak for other people… but mmk. I will be prepared to repeatedly see Stars for a long while yet then.

          • Carlos

When the next Pokemon game gets announced the rumors for Stars will end or be fulfilled. You’ll have to wait until then.

          • So not for another year or 2? Great.

        • Nowhere Man

Lol Eurogamer, as well as everyone else, got significantly more rumors wrong than they got right.

      • Puffdaddy

You have to admit, Eurogamer, Emily Rogers, and Laura Kate Dale has been right on practically everything so far about the Switch. Heck, even the Ubisoft dude who created Rayman (I believe his name is Ancel?) teased Mario X Rabbids a month ago.

        • I dunno about that and especially out of those Laura got a LOT wrong, she was also the one who couldn’t keep her mouth shut instead of trying to gain attention by making stuff up. And yeah I think Ancel is his name. I dun remember this tease but we will see. I just don’t see it happening. At least not for Switch.

  • Switchling

So how ’bout that Rabbids Mario game? lol

  • ben

3ds is dead in the water.

  • JasonBall

Was playing Zelda on Switch, thinking it’s the second best thing ever, then a friend pinged me and asked to play smash 3ds online. I did, and was amazed at how well the 3ds holds up. It feels newer and fresher than Wii U. Which is bonkers! But it really sums up why they still pursue 3ds. The DS concept was so amazing that 13 years later it can hold water next to the newest console on the market.

    • Phish!

and the 3ds is on that level where the graphics are good enough that it doesnt hurt your eyes, and not good enough to get more expensive games.

  • Shadowstrike

So after being slaughtered for years they are finally going to do something? Might be a little late Sony has god of war coming,Destiny and cod exclusive timed dlc,FF7,KH3,shenmue 3,uncharted,last of us 2,crash ect.

    • TheJuiciest

So a bunch of DLC + several games we likely may not even see until the PS5?

    • nemo37

Nintendo has Xenoblade 2, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey coming later in the year (these are the only ones we know of right now; there is probably more on the way, hence E3), and ARMS, MK8: Deluxe, and Zelda are all out by the time E3 rolls around. In addition, while the Wii U flopped, Nintendo’s position in the handheld market has remained strong (they, in your words, “slaughtered” the PS Vita). Moreover, the Switch is unlike the other systems in the current market in that it is a flexible and portable system. My bet is, that at most with a price adjustment, it will be able to hold its own against the PS4.

      • Tide

Don’t Forget Fire Emblem Warriors sometime this summer or fall. Whats most impressive is that’s only first-party titles as well. Personally i’m interested to see what rumors get proven or debunked at E3.

        • nemo37

Actually beyond FE: Warriors I forgot to mention that there is a new mainline FE game slated for 2018.

    • ben

Sorry, but none of those games are exciting really.

    • Tide

As of right now, not one of those titles has a confirmed release date. Along with that Sony has had little to hang on it’s mantle since Uncharted 4 back in May.

Horizon Zero Dawn has been fantastic, but PS4 Pro, PSVR, Last Guardian, World of Final Fantasy, Ni-oh, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Gravity Rush 2, and MLB the Show have all been underwhelming in success. These are all First-party Triple A titles which have been reviewing quite well, but they are all pulling under or just about 1million units sold.

      • hi v3.0

Persona 5 was a huge success in Japan, and it’s an AA game

        • Tide

“it was reported that Persona 5 was the fastest selling game in the Persona series, in Japan, after selling 337k copies within three days.” It’s now March and it’s sales total are around 400k, which is only sold another 100k. It’s sales have nearly flat lined.

      • Jon Turner

Plus KH3 COULD potentially be on Switch, too.

  • Melatelo

Oh man how I miss the days where Nintendo just killed it at E3. Where they pulled out all the stops and no limit to what was presented. Here’s hoping they can bring that magic back this year.

    • Phish!

2014 was pretty good, and 2013 gave us mk8 and smash 4

  • TheJuiciest

I normally would be more hesitant but everything just points to a big E3 after they upped how many Switches they wanted to ship out the first year. That and Game Freak blowing their cover that they’re already doing Switch stuff. Definitely see where they’re going with all this.

All the while studios like Retro have been eerily quite along with franchise giants like Smash, Animal Crossing, etc. I’m already excited just to see stuff like Xenoblade 2, Odyssey and the other stuff we know about and they usually have a number of stuff they like funding on the side every gen.

  • MajoraMan28

I hope they reveal FFVII for the system. It’s THE most important third-party title they could get, and that would make their E3 the bomb!
Seriously, imagine Super Mario Odyssey, FFVII, Xenoblade 2 and probably Metroid all in the same conference. *-*

    • Puffdaddy

FFVII is a timed exclusive for the PS4 though. I doubt it will be announced for other platforms until after the exclusive deal is up.

      • Jon Turner

That’s what I’m expecting as well. It’ll probably be about a year before the game hits other platforms. Hopefully Switch will be one of them.

      • MajoraMan28

Tomb Raider was revealed for PS4 before it launched on the X1, which at the time was thought to be the console home for the exclusivity deal.
The same could happen to FFVII

  • Get aboard the hype train and Nintendo……you have the momentum with the Switch’s success, keep it going by dropping bombs at E3. A new Metroid, mainline Pokémon Switch title, big 3rd party exclusives and exciting new IPs would easily win for you guys. Being more in depth about your online plans will be very welcomed. Bring it home Nintendo, bring it home

  • Pikastroff

Glad it’s the case. It was fine to have pretty much only Zelda last year because of how important the game is to Nintendo, but this year, we need to know more about the Switch’s lineup in the coming year.

I wonder if we will get any news on Pikmin 4. I remember Nintendo announcing a while ago that Pikmin 4 was in development, but we never really got anymore news since then other than the fact that they did say that Pikmin 4 was not their number one priority last year. However, since then, the game must be pretty close to finished by now.

While I will not necessarily expect it for this year, I hope that one day the Switch will have a Metroid game. Just to reassure myself, I’ll just try to see what happened with the SNES, N64, and Gamecube, in which we had an AMAZING Metroid game in the SNES (the SNES could represent the Wii; although the amazing game definitely is not Other M in my opinion, lol), followed by NO Metroid on the N64 (representing the Wii U, perhaps), and THEN a SPECTACULAR Metroid, Metroid Prime, on the Gamecube: what I hope is that the Switch will have its equivalent of Metroid Prime!

Now, if we SOMEHOW had both of those games officialy announced at E3 2017, PLUS more news on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, news on Super Mario Oddysey, AND news on the Breath of the Wild DLCs, PLUS any surprises, then it would be a perfect E3 2017 for Nintendo to me. I hope that the other companies will have good E3s as well! 🙂

  • Tlink7

I love my 3DS, but I feel its time has passed. I truly don’t know what more I could possibly want on the system, it has everything (even portable Smash!). I’d prefer if Nintendo focussed everything on the Switch, the 2011 specs of the 3DS are holding it back in 2017

  • Bart

I kind of doubt Nintendo have any huge surprises planned for this year, just seems to me like they already have plenty announced and it’s too early to start talking about next year… I wouldn’t mind being wrong on this though obviously.

I do wonder if any third parties have any surprises up their sleeves… Seems more likely to me any big surprises would come from them rather than Nintendo themselves, whose year is already looking pretty stacked.

  • Διονῦς84

Cut the crap already about the 3DS. Just bring portable games to the Switch

  • Ektoras Kalderis

I hope they show something from Retro. Their silence is distubing

  • ForeVision

I get the point about wanting the 3DS to fold into the Switch, but just looking at NE’s front page right now with Shin Megami Tensei: Deep Strange Journey, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology and Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, plus what we know is still coming (Example: Ever Oasis) I just can’t see them drop 3DS in the coming, at least the rest of 2017, and maybe 1-2 years after that.

  • Pedro Gomez

    Metroid or absolutely nothing.

  • Carlos

    My announcement hopes for E3:

    -Animal Crossing
    -Metroid(Main)
    -2D Zelda
    -Etrian Odyssey(Main)
    -Pokemon(D/P Remake or Stars)
    -GameCube VC(and VC in general)
    -Themes for Switch

  • The truth-ier

What did you expect him to say? Like he is a honest guy, he never said the wii u was a failure, really who releases two seperate consoles in the same generation. This is nothing like the extensions that the pro and scorpio are, they have ceased production of the wii u. So being a good company guy, why do you think he would say anything other then their E3 being great.

    • nemo37

Yet another incorrect and hypocritical comment. Here is Reggie admitting the Wii U’s failure and the problems that led to the failure (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/07/reggie_fils-aime_on_why_the_wii_u_was_misunderstood ). Secondly, your comment is hypocritical because being an Xbox fanboy you should know MS discontinued the production and sales of the original Xbox about 4 years into its lifespan, which would give it about the same life as the Wii U; so no, Nintendo has not been the first to do this.

    • masterjedi

A console generation is not dictated by when consoles are released, it’s determined by when a company moves from one console to the next. Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 were the same generation even though they each released a year apart. Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 were the same generation. Xbox One, PS4 and WiiU were the same generation. The Switch is in a generation by itself right now. Whatever the next iteration of the Xbox and Playstation is will be the same generation as the Switch.

  • Xaessya

I hoping for new Main Series Pokemon, Monster Hunter, port of Divinity Original Sin, Diablo 3, and Overwatch for Switch.

  • Airsh Bornely

I just want F-Zero to finally happen. New IPS will be good though.

  • I dig it~.

Also, still cracks me up with the 3DS. I am super glad it’s still getting games, especially because of the unique niche it exists in. But I still won’t get over a Gamestop employee telling my friend that it’s being phased out and nothing more is coming. Lol. Because they can totally predict what Nintendo and third parties are doing.

I’m excited to see more of Switch games. I want to see the Tales game and whatever else Bamco may have in store, and same for SE. If Gust made a remake(s) of their older Atelier games, I would love those on the Switch. ♥

    • ronin4life

Gamestop employees are as knowledgae, insightful and helpful as your average games ‘journalist’.

Which is to say, they aren’t any of these things at all

      • Oh, for sure. They try, but it’s just more hilarious. My friend ate it up too, and I just laughed and shook my head.

  • Obsolydian

Nintendo probably will have a lot of cool things to show off at E3 seeing as the Switch just came out. That being said, I generally don’t believe a word of what Reggie says about anything.

  • NinetalesCommander

Hoo boy, I really hope he’s not setting us up for disappointment.
    Remember E3 2015? Yeah…

    • ForeVision

Ohh I remember alright, when people brought pitchforks, torches, and wanted a certain game to cease development and disappear from the face of the earth (Federation Force)

If anything Nintendo’s E3 has taught us over the years, it’s to live with what happens, and hope for the best.

      • NinetalesCommander

        You said it!

  • ForeVision

As time goes by, I feel more and more people will be looking towards E3 for their news and some on whether or not to buy a Switch. There’s bound to be a lot of pressure for them, this year especially, since there haven’t been a massive amount of games at launch, and a few coming until E3, which albeit are pretty big, are still a few. Let’s hope they get a good showing since it being the Switch’ first E3.

  • burchdude65

    I hope there’s a dedicated 3DS Direct/Digital Event, followed by a Switch-focused press conference.

  • R.Z.

After the big nothings of the past two years (RETRO, WTF have you been doing ?), I really hope they actually have a lot of stuff to keep people excited about the Switch’s future.
