Reggie says Switch sales are “unprecedented” for Nintendo

Posted on December 17, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

Nintendo announced this week that Switch sales have surpassed 10 million units worldwide in its first nine months. For a new system that launched early in the year rather than during the holidays, that’s pretty darn good.

CNET spoke with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime after hearing about Switch’s big sales. He called Switch’s sales “unprecedented” before adding that its pace “is one of the fastest in our own history and in gaming history.”

Reggie told the site:

“The fact that we reached 10 million units sold on a global basis and we’re not fully through the holidays is unprecedented territory for Nintendo. The pace is one of the fastest in our own history and in gaming history.”

Do you(Nintendo of World) regret not putting enough Nintendo Switch on shelves to reach the 10 million faster?

    • TDude73

In the words of Donatello, “…it’s a start.”

    • nemo37

I think caution is key. You do not want to produce units that you may not sell until you are absolutely sure that there is interest. The entertainment business is quite volatile, and I think Nintendo (along with other players in this business) understand that. I even believe caution is going to be key going forward. Switch is successful right now (and I hope that success continues as this is the platform I have personally been waiting for) but until the user base grows to the point of being viable we cannot say the system’s success is guaranteed. A console’s lifecycle is a marathon, and Nintendo has to play the long game if and until there are enough users to keep the system afloat for many years.

    • Vive

After the failure of the Wii U they didn’t know how much interest was left for a Nintendo console.

  • And just think…….once that mainline Pokémon title comes to the Switch the sales are gonna double the units sold….mark my words

    • Force

I’m just hoping they take the chance and serious leap from 3DS to Switch to really bring Pokemon to the next level. To not do so, would be to waste their opportunity.

      • Xiarno

They already confirmed it is going to the Nintendo Switch… And it is already in the work.

        • Burning Gravity

          missing his/her point entirely…

            lol ikr

          • Nhat Anh Hoang

Just HD graphic and HD resolution with 60fps, done. Anything more is asking Game Freak too much

      • Evan Gustavson

Can you elaborate on what you think would bring pokemon to the “next level”?
Because they already confirmed that they aren’t going back to 3DS, if that’s what you mean.

I’m sorta just really hoping that they let me trade with other users on the same system, or at least bank. Me and my bro share the one Switch console, because its a console…
Handhelds are more personal and private, so we each have our own…
Its already going to get ugly in our household over who gets to try out the new Pokémon first, since we’ve always picked different versions and played simultaneously.

        • Force

“Because they already confirmed that they aren’t going back to 3DS, if that’s what you mean.” Huh, new to me, but even so if Kimishima sees potential in the dedicated handheld market still, and there will be a dedicated 3DS follow-up, then you can be sure that receives Pokemon.

“Handhelds are more personal and private, so we each have our own…
Its already going to get ugly in our household over who gets to try out the new Pokémon first, since we’ve always picked different versions and played simultaneously.” Well, do you remember how Nintendo mentioned they’d preferably see a Switch per person in each household? If that’s anything to go by, I’m afraid you’re fresh out of luck.

By next level, I mean actually seeing the pokemon’s moves connect, them physically touching each-other and fighting eachother instead of just going over to show a hit from their perspective. The current Pokemon games tax the systems they’re on quite severely, and on the Switch they’ll be rid of this restriction, so there’s a lot you can do here.

Not to mention it’ll be the first mainstream Pokemon game on the big-screen, this is a huge opportunity, even if I don’t think Game Freak will fully realize and make use of this, since they’re very much still handheld game-makers, and I’m sure they probably don’t think of the docked mode as important enough for their time, but a man can dream, however vain that may be.

          • Mark

I share much of the same fears. I know that I read that Game Freak was inspired by BOTW to try to shake things up… but honestly, I don’t expect much different than their normal handheld offerings. Which I think is going to fall a little flat.

Yeah; GF stated that USUM was the last 3DS mainline Pokemon game. So I guess the future is mobile + whatever systems Nintendo makes.

          • the pokemon guys are going to make the same terrible pokemon game they always do

          • Mark

Oh come on, Uncle Phil. Where’s the hug?

          • Dude they’ve put out 3 games for the 3DS that don’t even use 3D. The games they put out for DS used the touch screen for battle commands and nothing else. It was just a blank screen for most of the game.

Trying to get them to do HD is asking way too much. They would likely put out a 480p game for Switch.

          • Mark

Hey UPH, what games do you enjoy? When I see your comments, it’s usually calling out games you don’t like. Do you have a shortlist of favorite games? Doesn’t even need to be Nintendo games. Just curious.

          • right now im playin pikmin 1. i had liked pikmin 3.

          • Mark

That is an awesome list of high-quality titles. Love Shadow of the Colossus; I played a ton of that back when it first came out. I love Layton, too (obviously); Unwound Future’s my favorite of the bunch.

          • Eagle367

            What about xcx and xc2?

          • They didn’t put out xenoblade 2 on wiiu

          • Eagle367

I thought you were just talking about some of your favourite games in general not just Wii U. Anyways you didn’t like XCX that much?
Edit:Just saw the list again, you don’t have a switch or something?

Ill have to agree with you there

          • Force

They may go there, who knows. I agree that it’s likely we’ll see just a spruced up version of what we had on 3DS, but maybe, just maybe, they’ll put in the effort and go the distance. One can dream.

        • Xiarno

If they make the PokeBank again, I really hope they’re gonna make it FREE or atleast make another way, like the old system, that is FREE. Because this is what was blocking me and make me lose all my PKMN 🙁

        • Noo Badie

This is a dream that me and my cousin had a long time ago lol

          • I know right that will be great you can have a free open world to explore and catch Pokemon with DLC’s visit other regions.

    • Xiarno

Metroid Prime 4 also, do not forget that.

      • Burning Gravity

Metroid is niche, it’s not really a major system seller like Pokemon

        • amak11

          Pokemon is niche too.

          • Evan Gustavson

            You think so?
Pokémon is one of Nintendo’s four pillars imo.
            Mario
            Zelda
            Pokémon
            Kirby

          • Xiarno

Mario, Zelda & Pokemon, yes. But Kirby ? Yes, one of they’re major IP, but not one of the four pillars… mhhh… I would more go for Metroid OR Smash.

          • Evan Gustavson

It’s big in japan, at least.

It’s not just about popularity of the IP but also staying power.
Fads come and go, and then come back after a while (You know, like Metroid or Star Fox).
A truly great franchise does not go on the backburner.

          • Xiarno

Well, no. But Metroid: Samus Return and Metroid: Prime 4 making they’re comeback can maybe mean it’s is gonna be more regurly (Sorry for my english) from now. (WARNING, SPOIL ALERT) : And seing that after the credit, the little scene that clearly show a X-Parasites, making reference to M:Fusion could greatly means there’s gonna be a sequel.

          • Triforce of the Gods

Pretty sure they just showed it because of Fusion’s backstory that the X-Parasites got out of control as a result of Samus’ actions in Samus Returns. Don’t forget it’s a remake of Metroid II like Zero Mission was a remake of the first one.

          • awesomeparadise3

Kirby has sold double of what Metroid has.

          • Hidden Flare

If we had to make a list of nintendo series based on the series and no crossover or spinoff (like no mario kart cause its really mario or smash cause its all nintendo) say Kirby would likely be next right now after zelda mario and pokemon.

          • JohnnyBravoo

Isn’t Yoshi a better seller than Kirby though?

          • Splatoon is a better seller than both of those franchises

          • Radish

And Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and Smash are even better sellers than Splatoon. The 4th pillar is one of those 3.

          • True

          • Gregory Weagle

Mario Kart is part of the main pillar (Mario) and Smash is more like the concrete floor that allows the pillars to stand. So Animal Crossing is #4 by default.

          • Radish

            Lol fair enough!

          • Gregory Weagle

Easy to do when Splatoon has only TWO games in it’s entire career.

          • Radish

I have no doubt that Splatoon is going to remain a popular mainstay in Nintendo’s arsenal. The fact that the first Splatoon sold 4 million in just 1 year on Wii U was beyond remarkable.

          • Gregory Weagle

I put Yoshi with Mario since it debuted as such.

          • awng782

In no way is Kirby as relevant and Mario, Zelda, or Pokémon. Not even close.

          • Radish

I’d say the 4 pillars are:
            Mario
            Zelda
            Pokemon
            and either

Smash, Mario Kart or Animal Crossing

          • awng782

            Lol, just say 6 pillars.

          • Radish

Lol probably. All 6 of those franchises are capable of games that reach 10 million sales.

          • Mark

            Mario
            Zelda
            Pokemon
            Steel Diver

          • Radish

            Lmao! You mean Nintendogs :>

          • no one gives two farts about kirby

          • Eagle367

Splatoon is more of a pillar than Kirby at this point. And smash and mario kart 8 are much more important than

          • Xiarno

Well, all based on opinion. People that like Pokemon might not like Call of duty.. People that like Call of duty might not like Pokemon and so on for every game. Opinion based 😉

          • JohnnyBravoo

In what world is Pokemon niche?

Search “top video game selling franchises” and be astounding at how high Pokemon is on that list.

          • Mark

Pokemon is niche in the same way that Call of Duty and FIFA are niche.

          • Nowhere Man

            No.

          • Nhat Anh Hoang

LOL, it sold at least 5-6 times more than metroid

        • Xiarno

Actually, it is… Just that there is not enough game. If there was more game coming out, it’s would definetely be a system seller. These type of IP Nintendo make are good, but making them that they aren’t a lot of game coming out make it really surprising that it is one of they’re most popular / major franchise.

          • NeptuniasBeard

Metroid, not even by the most generous estimation, is anywhere close to Pokémon’s level. Why do you think it took us this long to get new Metroid games?

according to gamefaqs the switch is dead… so i dunno guys…

    • Xiarno

Seing how the Switch is so popular right now, it’s clearly isn’t dead and is extremely far away from being dead. Saying that is basically only for the clickbait.

I wouldn’t be surprised if (when) Microsoft decides to launch their real next-gen console ahead of the holiday season to beat Sony to the punch.

    • TDude73

The words “real next-gen” does not exist, FutureDisney. It belongs in the magical land of make.believe. And besides, Microsoft had already launched “the most powerful video game system” a month ago.

      • FutureFox

I really don’t understand if I hit a nerve or not, or something. All I was saying was XboneX is just a console upgrade added to the Xbone brand.

  • TDude73

The word “Unprecedented” is a trademark of Electronic Arts. (end of sarcasm)
