Thanks to Gfk, we have a look at the top three best-selling games in countries around the world for the first half of 2017. Zelda: Breath of the Wild made the list in quite a few territories. The game was even number one in France, Norway, and Sweden.

  • Huh, interesting per country. Lol, the person from France wasn’t kidding about Nintendo Switch taking off there, apparently. Not like all of the BotW numbers are Switch numbers, but I’ll bet a lot of them were. Nice to see a region still invested in Nintendo.

    • DarkVader

A lot of regions are interested in Nintendo tbh. Their games are golden.

      • Undoubtedly, and understandably. I’m really glad for it. And even if their games aren’t in the top 3, that doesn’t make their performance bad.

    • R.Z.

We got a measly 1500 Metroid collector editions as thanks …
      :-/

      • The EU CE for Samus Returns looks so good though. I’m a little bitter about the US vs EU one, but super happy for EU.

        • R.Z.

          Yeah, it is pretty good.
They made so few of them though …

          • Ohhh. I wonder why. I mean, I know companies tend to go small for CE numbers, but to cover the whole EU? Hmmm.

          • R.Z.

1500 was just for France though.
But that definitely wasn’t enough, the preorders lasted a couple of minutes at best, people who actively hunted it missed it because of the time it took them to enter credit card data.

I think it was closer to 10 000 for all of EU, Germany seems to have gotten a decent chunk, I managed to get one from Amazon DE (I hope it will go through).

          • Yikes, didn’t realize it was that popular of a pre-order. On the one hand, I’m super glad! On the other, dang.

    • Fore

Well, I can’t speak for my country, but the Switches at my retailer are all sold out. They’ll be restocked this month, but I don’t expect that to last 😛

      • Lol, yeah, I am glad to see the Switch stock moving. It seems that few countries tend to have stock on shelves.

        • Fore

I don’t know Japanese, but if I did, I’d send them a message and inform them of these countries that have stock. Honestly, Nintendo of Europe should see if there are countries that have a lot, and see if they can’t shift stock towards Japan.

          • jorden1506

because of the packaging and lots of places in EU selling out too they can’t just sent it to Japan

          • Fore

I daresay you’ve missed “Have a lot” and “jocks” implying that there’s a surplus that goes unsold, and that people are not interested.

Whenever my retailer has stock, I’ll happily notify whoever is in Europe or can import them and requires one. If I could speak Japanese, and my retailer did import to Japan, I’d send them some messages.

          • Indeed, and I kind of wonder if Nintendo may slow the amount of Switch units they send over to those countries now, so that they can give Japan a chance.
            Haha, right!

          • Fore

I can see that happening. Though the Switch is still selling out mostly everywhere quite quickly. Splatoon being shortly followed by MHXX in Japan means it’s going to be out of stock for a loooooooooong time is my prediction.

In the West, I can see Mario doing great numbers, perhaps Splatoon 2 (not sure) and Rabbids could sell quite well is my prediction.

    • Vive

Nintendo is the no.1 in France, even Wii U sold decently well there, plus prices are a lower there.

I’ve bought Zelda and ARMS from Amazon France because they were 10-15 euro cheaper than what we have here. (usually around 59-69 euro for Nintendo’s first party titles)

      • Paddy Alfan

        Hm, interesting
        Do they ships internationally?

        • Vive

Yes in EU (dunno outside), you have to pay something extra for the shipping cost but in my case it was still more convenient than buying the same game here.

          • Paddy Alfan

Probably the case. I see an increasing of stock from my local stores of reg 2 games because they priced cheaper than my own region, even with the shipping and custom included.
Thank god fir the region free year.

      • Oh, I didn’t realize even the Wii U fared a bit better there. Interesting how France is so Nintendo positive and UK is negative.

        • Vive

I think that’s part of the reason why Ubisoft is always supporting Nintendo.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I get that GTA V still get’s new content regularly but how does that alone keep sales coming back to it? I imagine whoever wanted it now just get’s it used, so where are these top numbers coming from?

    • DarkVader

I agree! Something is fishy about it, lol. Well, GTA always relied on controversy and taboo culture and that alone guarantees sales, GTA games are broken AF when you really look at it.

    • Fredy Rodriguez Ortega

GTA is the game all the kids want to play

    • R.Z.

By now the prices have seriously dropped, it’s just no use buying it used when a new copy costs about the same.
Plus like it or not GTAV is the pinnacle of open world games in a modern setting.
It’s just the game you “have to” play if you have a machine capable of running it.

    • Tlink7

There will always be new children to buy the game

    • Owl-Stretching Time

A large part of the sales are from children who’ve been saving up their allowances/birthday money for a while in order to be able to afford the game. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a kid come into gamestop to buy GTA over the years, and I don’t exactly spend a lot of time there.

    • jorden1506

There are a lot of specials where GTAV is bundled with PS4’s nowadays so some just get a second one when upgrading to a PS Pro or Switch from Xbox to PS etc

  • awng782

I wish the list was a bit more comprehensive. I’d like to see the Top 10 best selling games per country, not just the Top 3.

  • Phish!

As a Benelux citizen myself i must say that im ashamed xD

    • Fore

Seems the Nintendo people of the Benelux are not numerous enough to make a dent. I’m not saying to send recruiters around, but we may need to send recruiters around 😛

  • awng782

This may be a bit unrelated, but here is how Nintendo games performed in the UK and Germany during the month of June, rankings wise:

    UK:
    #11 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
    #18 Arms
#20 Zelda Breath of the Wild

    Germany:
    #5 Mario Kart 8
#7 Zelda: Breath of the Wild
    #9 Arms

    The difference is staggering.

    • Vive

UK is the country where the meme “Knack outsold Mario” started, it doesn’t reflect EU sales at all.

      • awng782

        Thank god…

  • Fredy Rodriguez Ortega

Casuals(GTA, FIFA,PES) rule the market, nothing new. it is good to know that some amazing games like HZD and Zelda got its places in some countries

    • Paddy Alfan

So we go from match 3, endless runner for definition of casuals, to gta and sports game?
What’s next? Dota2, overwatch going to be casuals?

      GTA IS awesome, and amazing.

      • Fredy Rodriguez Ortega

FIFA and GTA for me are awesome and amazing too but I know it is casual. GTAs are awesome games but you can not deny that it is casual, all the lil kids want to play his favorite youtuber game and a lot of adult non regular gamers only play the game to kill the time doing the dumb one

  • Rafael Bueno

Brazil is like the worst country in the game market

    • Burning Gravity

The import taxes make things pretty tough for gamers there, if that’s what you mean

    • Aline Piroutek

Oh yess, even Palau is better

    • Actually your neighbors like Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia high taxes kill gamers

      • Rafael Bueno

        oh wow

        • Colombia 19% tax
          Peru 18%
          Ecuador 12%
Venezuela I don’t know if they have Tax but right now is hell

Brazil isn’t the only one who has a very bad tax management

  • DarkVader

    Casuals, casuals everywhere!

  • Luke WalkingMoonTree

Italy is casual land, and I’m Italian, PlayStation is super popular as in most of Europe but not even the good games (aka Horizon and Persona 5) mangaed to outsell FIFA…

    • Vive

Yes here it’s FIFA and nothing else.

  • Tlink7

    Relegated to ”Benelux”, great xD

    • Fore

*throws Stroopwafels* We shan’t stand for this!

  • Paddy Alfan

    Seriously Switzerland? Wildlands?

    • awng782

Wildlands is the top selling game of 2017 in the US thus far.

      • Paddy Alfan

Is it console only or all platform? Because I got it and for honor bundled for free with pc purchase.
If you count all that bundle, no wonder they sell like a hotcakes.

        • awng782

These are physical sales only for all platforms, no bundles.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a pretty big seller. The only Tom Clancy game with faster sales was last year’s The Division.
