Retro Revengers

After previously appearing on PC, Retro Revengers is making the jump to consoles and we’ll be seeing it on Switch in just a few days. Ratalaika Games and Shinyuden are planning a July 23, 2024 launch.

Retro Revengers is a retro-style adventure platformer inspired by past hits. It contains music from Manami Matsumae, composer of Mega Man and Shovel Knight plus boss designs by mangaka Yuu Watari.

More information can be found in the following overview:

Ossan, Taicho and Notchi are a group of video game streamers known in Japan as “Ii Otonatachi”. They exist in real life and are stars at the Niconico channel, the Japan-only video service specialised in otaku content. Retro games are a huge part of their channel, so they decided to pay tribute to the classics they love the most (Mega Man, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts) and become video game characters themselves, the Retro Revengers, to save the world from the triple A menace that might make old school videogames disappear. The gameplay emulates the look, sound and feeling of a game made before 1995.

Embark on a journey with Ossan, Mao, Taicho, Matchan and Notchi as you harness their newfound abilities bestowed upon them by the Retro Goddess. Meet companions from the past, defend yourself from enemies using a wide array of skills, and overcome the bosses blocking your way to the Demon Overlord of Triple-A.

Explore diverse stage environments and different powers with each companion, all in beautiful 16-bit pixel art and accompanied by retro-themed music reminiscent of the classics in the genre. Master the characters’ different powers as you traverse diverse environments full of unforgiving enemies in this retro-style platformer.

There are five different characters to play, all with their own type of jump and charge attack, and certain levels with different terrains, enemies and traps, which suit some characters better than others.

Each character plays completely differently from each other. The abilities the characters have range from a Homing Fire Ball to Power Poots. Ossan can float momentarily after jumping and throw knives, for example. The levels also change to revolve around the character meant for the level. Like having grappling hook spots for the character with a grapple to grab onto.

Upon meeting the Retro Goddess, the friends are given special powers which they will need to take down the Demon Lord of Triple-A and their minions. The goal of this Demon and his crew is to put an end to all indie, retro, classic and personal videogame projects so only the big-budgeted games can rule and he can live on forever in the minds of players.
