Nintendo’s hotly anticipated rhythm-based music game will be put to the test as consumers and eager beat-keepers gather at an exclusive invitation-only event at New York’s Scratch DJ Academy for a night of game sampling and turntable spinning. Following the April 5 launch of the Rhythm Heaven™ video game, playable on either the Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems, this unique event will give players and spectators an up-close look at the new game with interactive demonstrations, a live Rhythm Heaven/DJ battle and prize giveaways. The Scratch DJ Academy is the perfect place for consumers to experience the game for the first time, allowing players to apply rhythm skills learned in the game to real-life DJ techniques.World-renowned DJ instructors DJ Daddy Dog and DJay Jung will also be on hand at the event to show attendees how the rhythm drills and beat-keeping exercises found in the DJ School mini-game in Rhythm Heaven relates to real-life DJ skills.

“We took it to Activision and Nintendo and everyone loved it. But the big problem was that although the game itself was pretty small in terms of file size, it really needed a lot of rewriteable flash memory to store all the save games. There was no cartridge available at the time for Nintendo DS that could support that save game file size the game needed…When we started working with the DSi platform it became immediately clear that it’s the perfect platform for Mixed Messages. DSiWare was the perfect service to get the game out to everyone…Since you take turns alternating writing sentences and drawing pictures, it works the best when you have an odd number of players,” he said. “If you have an even number of players, the game auto generates a really funny starter sentence from a database of nouns, verbs and phrases…We had an internal site that had dozens of game sessions posted and it was just hilarious to read – and even more fun playing it at lunch time or when were out to dinner. SEGA: MadWorld sales encouraging, House of the Dead doing well

It appears as though the both MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill may be performing better than originally anticipated. Overkill sold just 45,000 units in February according to NPD numbers and MadWorld was absent from various sales charts, leading many to believe that both games were falling short. However, Sean Ratcliffe, vice president of marketing at Sega of America, has confirmed otherwise.
“House of the Dead has done very well and has absolutely met our expectations. The first set of data for Mad World is very encouraging, as well…If it resonates with the audience, yes, we absolutely want to make that into a franchise [MadWorld]. I think it’s unique, and there are many aspects of that game which are sort of pushing boundaries. And it’s just great fun.”
