Nintendo: Hardcore gamers will initially be the DSi consumers

“Right out of the gate [the DSi audience] is probably the hardcore gamers. They’re usually the early adopters that want to get the latest version of something, and they’ll be the ones that put it through its paces the hardest and give us all kind of feedback and tell us what they like and don’t like.” – Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America spokesperson
The feeling I’ve been assuming is that some people will be perfectly fine with their DS/DS Lite, while others will move on to the DSi due to some of the new features it presents. Anyone planning on picking up the DSi when it launches?
Analyst: DSi downloads can be a “game changer”

With Nintendo’s newest announcement of the DSi, many have already began analyzing the system’s potential, including its impact on the market. Now, analyst Michael Patcher offered his opinion on DSi downloads, stating that it can be a “game changer.”
“I suspect that broader appeal will ultimately be determined by the quantity and quality of downloadable content. If we see games like Boingz and Tetris (new Wii Ware games) exported to the DSi, or see new innovations that use the camera, I think it will be a game changer.”
Patcher also commented on Sony’s recent comments, in which it was stated that Sony isn’t sure if the DSi “will be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12.”
“I think that the core of the user base is between 6 and 18 (probably 75% of active users), so Koller isn’t that far off. The biggest reason for Western users over 18 to buy a DS is the games – like Brain Age – that appeal to older users. The camera feature, brighter screens, thinner case, etc. are nice to have, but don’t magically make my mom want to have one. I don’t see how the device suddenly appeals to adults unless Nintendo is able to demonstrate that the camera feature allows for more sophisticated game play.”

WiiSpeak and WiiSpeak Channel launching December 5 in Europe

Socialising and communicating with friends and family has just got easier – and more fun – as the new Wii Speak accessory and Wii Speak Channel are launched for Wii across Europe on 5 December 2008.
Wii Speak enables people to connect to and communicate with friends using the free-to-use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection* in a way that is very socially inclusive. Wii Speak can be connected directly to the console and pick up the conversations from an entire room of people, meaning friends and families can all get involved in conversations, sharing gaming and social experiences together. It’s just like using a phone to make a call and chat with other Wii-friends: but with Wii Speak, everyone in the room can get involved in the conversation.
The new Wii Speak Channel, accessed from the Wii’s main menu, allows up to four console users – who can be anywhere in the world – to connect together to chat, or to share pictures and text messages at no extra cost. Once connected, the Wii Speak Channel brings user’s Miis to life: as users’ Miis represent them on-screen during their conversations. When players are talking to each other, their Miis also ‘talk’ to match the sound that is being picked up by the Wii Speak accessory.

Nintendo on why the SD storage solution took so long
Posted on 16 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii | 1 Comment
Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications, has told Kombo what has taken a Wii storage solution so long, highlighting that the company wants to make sure that the interface is intuitive and that it is a necessity to make sure the solution is of high-quality. “We heard the gamers, there was frustation there. We hate hearing that so we tried to create a solution for it and we’re still listening, we’ll see what the response is to this and see how it goes. To why it took so long, I can tell you that quality control is job number one for us. We don’t want to get it out there until we know it’s going to work, we don’t want to get it out there until we know that it’s going to be a good easy intuitive interface. Hopefully good things come to those that wait.”
That last line sounds pretty good to me! I’m just glad we finally have a solution. Hopefully, the storage solution will be able to end the problems that many Wii owners face. I know some had wanted a hard drive, but if this works well, I personally won’t mind the SD card solution.
